Inside The Fight To Stop The Supreme Court From Slashing The Social Safety Net

A case that could have staggeringly far-reaching ramifications is on the Supreme Court’s docket for the upcoming term and has, broadly, attracted very little attention.

And once again we have the spectacle of a so-called Christian nation gleefully willing to throw its poor, its sick, its huddled masses of citizens under the bus of corporate greed and cynicism.

Until we cut the corporations off at their political knees and get their money, all of it, out of our politics, we will teeter on the edge of the abyss of tyranny and one day one small push will hurl the nation into that darkness.

Oh, one more thing. The current Republican party must be burned to ground and buried in the deepest pit we can find. And we should throw half the current Supreme Court justices in the pit with the Republicans.

If the Supreme Court is determined to slash the Social Safety Net there’s NOTHING that can be done to stop them. Not directly. The current Court is a GOP PAC insofar as it acts. It’s purpose is to get done what Democracy will not allow the GOP to do. If voters take reprisal on the GOP for the Court’s actions that might slow things down a bit.

That Court was built to advance the worst of the GOP’s agenda. I don’t see them stopping that unless the GOP takes a hit for it. They probably won’t though.

My first impression is this story represents a lot of work on the part of the reporter and possibly her editor. My compliments and I hope to see more of the kind of work that attracted me to TPM during the dark years of the Bush era.

The big question centers on private rights of action under Section 1983, which is part of a Reconciliation-era civil rights law meant to protect newly freed slaves from being terrorized by state officials.

@kate_riga I think the word you want there is Reconstruction-era.

Yes, that was my first reaction as well. Riga did her HW provided good analysis, sourcing & background. I suppose we could call this “vintage” TPM as it is uncommon post Trump.

We know how the corrupted court will rule on this and it will be 6-3 to kill the safety net in the name of Jesus.

Amen.

And the backup judges like Cannon.

Or at least she needs to be pressured and embarrassed and humiliated on the pathetic work she does.

I know these Fed Soc Rapturists don’t care, but you know what? They’re human and they do not like to get crapped on for doing really shitty work. Sure, their first response is to lash out but after awhile it will wear on them, it is embarrassing whether they admit or not.

She really is beholden to no one at this point. Alito or McConnell can’t fire her any more than Joe can. So do your job right chica.

Thank you to Kate Riga for bringing this to everyone’s attention. This is a flashing red light. If the case is not dropped/settled prior to oral arguments, the SC will gleefully gut the social safety net in this country. It is depressing beyond belief.

Yes, this is good investigating and reporting. Brava, Kate! @kate_riga

When a country fails to protect the most vulnerable of its population – the children, the elders, the ill, the disabled, the poor, the mentally ill – it has failed its moral responsibility to all of us. Elder abuse is real, and it has been particularly bad during the COVID years – because of fewer people being able to visit people in nursing homes, and the difficulty in retaining good healthcare and social work staff.

Here’s the message for Democrats: If Republicans win then kiss your Social Security goodbye. They’ll steal every dollar you paid into the system your whole life.

You bet they will. Of course, they’ll be enjoying their erections minus the Viagra, with no thought of the millions of old folks who will be tossed from Medicaid nursing homes, or tossed from their houses. The GQP motto is die faster you old fucks, we want your money.

I predict assassinations will once again, be in Americas future. .

Can’t wait to hear which bible verse they’ll use to defend their opinion.

While they may not like to get crapped on for doing shitty work, they exist in a political culture that now has vast numbers and that supports and admires the work they do to bring down democracy and liberty. They aren’t embarrassed, they get energized by their supporters, and feel justified in their feelings of contempt for the rest of us, you know, the rational ones of us that can actually think our way out of a wet paper bag.

One degree of separation: I have a stepdaughter on Medicaid. She worked for decades, raised 4 boys to adulthood. She’s now unable to work full time, has serious medical issues. These people looking to cut the safety nets are either greedy or sadistic.
