A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo. Sign up for the email version. It’s Not Just Trump Who Will Get Off Scot-Free While the Justice Department reportedly seeks to end its prosecutions of Donald Trump before his inauguration and Trump promises to pardon the convicted Jan. 6 rioters,…
Years ago I read a great line in a sports article which I remember as being about baseball. It read, ‘Baseball isn’t what is used to be, but then, it never was’. ‘America 1.0’, an open, inclusive country striving to achieve equality at home and freedom worldwide turned out to be an illusion. At best, a noble aspiration that was never realized. Mr. Trump’s re-election shows that America 1.0 is not just dead, but that in fact it never really existed. The challenge for all of us is whether we can create an America 2.0 that really does strive to achieve the goals mentioned above. I think it is still possible.
Interesting takes from a couple of folks I respect …
One takeaway:
I think younger voters and Latino voters are the most interesting story. But you also had Trump winning white suburban women. I mean, there’s just so many things that defied the pre-election narrative and defy a simple demographic explanation.

January 6 rioters are all traitors to this country who staged a coup that ultimately succeeded on 11/5/2024. The promise of America has been destroyed by these people. It is now the 21st century’s most extreme hypocrisy.
At first I read that as “The crisis is back in town”. Of course, that’s true, too
This country is full of racists and mysogynists. All the sick fuck does is confirm their imagined grievances. It is not the fault of overqualified women and minorities that unqualified White men are no longer at the front of the line.
I just hope I live long enough to see the truth and reconciliation hearings.
holiday weekend
Is America still doing Veterans Day?
Participation trophy! Yay!
The impacts of Trump’s win do not fall evenly. Among those carrying the greatest weight:
Credit where due, #1 is indisputably the people who voted for Trump despite knowing who and what he is.
Many of those J6 thugs were tracked down because people reported them. Some of them will seek revenge on those who did the reporting. I fear for the lives of the ex-wives, neighbors, co-workers, and others who will now be in danger. Perhaps when Grump announces the pardons, someone will ask him if they are protected from prosecution for any crime they commit in a quest for retribution.
And they will all be pardoned and the mandated school textbooks will hail them as great American heroes. January 6 will become a national holiday.
In the US, we no longer have a functioning press. All the major outlets have been converted to propaganda rags for billionaires. They are violating their Constitutional mandate, but the Constitution is just a quaint antiquity now.
I truly dread saying this, but I guess the only way to alter this death knell for truth is to get our own billionaires to buy up news outlets. Actual journalism is relegated to the back alleys of social media and podcasts, begging for subscriptions but being drowned by the plague of RWNJ poison. Where are the liberal billionaires who can counter this toxic trend?
Of course they’ll evade the law. The right wants a paramilitary force, so a paramilitary force it will get.
Taking a strong stand for the independence of the the Federal Reserve, Chairman Jerome Powell told reporters that Trump does not have the power as president to fire or demote him and that he would refuse to resign if Trump asked him to.
Translation: Powell will be fired as soon as he resists Trump’s order to lower interest rates, as swiftly as Trump fired James Comey from his “protected from presidential politics” post running the FBI.
The Hatch Act. How droll.
Read it. This person largely gets it.
