How The Far-Right Made A Martyr Out Of Ashli Babbitt | Talking Points Memo

Boss Pelosi still has his balls hanging from her rear view mirror.

Ashli Babbit: Just another peaceful tourist, minding her own business, who is mercilessly mowed down by a Capitol Police Officer.

The mad mayor of Mierd-a-Grotto?

This is all so very, very stupid. I get why the GOP is trying to whitewash the insurrection. No matter what the select committee does or doesn’t find, there’s not going to be anything positive for the GOP in any of it. I even get why Trump is making this idiot a martyr. If you believe the election was stolen then, in your mind, she was defending democracy and the duly elected president. It’s all part of selling the Big Lie. What makes absolutely no sense is that any GOPer is following him down that path. This isn’t one of those things that might be open to interpretation, where decent and fair-minded folks can disagree. They’re on VIDEO chanting “Hang Mike Pence.” All the spin the world can’t undo what everyone heard and saw. All the backpedaling and martyrdom won’t erase the images of police being brutally beaten, the damage to the Capitol, and the gallows they erected to hang our leaders.

Can we move on to 'discarded ’ with a quickness?

I do feel sorry for Ashli Babbit and her family. Not because the police did anything wrong, but because she was so deluded that she willingly found herself in that position. Babbitt made a conscious choice to join the mob, and probably a less considered choice to vault through the window. It’s possible she thought the attack on the capitol was just a lark, or thought she was having an adventure, or thought she was doing something heroic. It’s also possible she was consumed with hatred for the people inside.

My sympathy is limited by the fact that the delusion that griped her and people like her is usually accompanied by a conscious choice to hate and demonize other people – in addition to the garden variety self-aggrandizement. So, I’m not saying she was some wide-eyed innocent, I’m just bemoaning the fact that her particular delusion is so virulent and widespread.

Wasn’t she the one that cut off her husband’s…
Uh, no. My confusion.

OT, but not surprising at all.

OT, but…

You may as well forget about the 1/6 insurrection, the starving children in Africa, the GOP attacks on voting rights, and all those abused animals in the late-night commercials with the Sarah McLachlan song in the background, because there are people in the Hamptons who have to take off their $800 sneakers in order to mow their own lawns! They can’t even find peons to change their linens or do their nails! How will they find the time to they go sailing with Mums and Daddums?!!!

SNL really should have stayed on the air all summer. A sketch featuring spoiled society matrons running their weed whackers while wearing Balenciaga cocktail gowns would be a fucking scream!

Hmmm. I am trying to think of the right phrase…oh, yeah! “What an asshole!”

Exactly! Her crazy is ON TAPE. If they continue to try to deify her, they’re gonna necessarily force the media to roll the footage of her demanding people’s deaths and spewing insanity and hate. The only sympathy anyone sane might have for her afterward is the same kind you feel for the crazy preacher on the corner screaming that everyone’s going to hell.

And I am sure any craziness she committed while in uniform will also be outed.

I think it’s very thoughtful on your part to extend to Babbitt the courtesy of trying to figure out what was going on inside that head of hers. It does make one wonder and will likely be a topic for doctoral students for years to come. Personally, I just don’t care anymore. I want them all gone. I don’t care how. They’ve done enough damage.

Thanks, it’s been a while since I’ve looked any of that up. Though beatification is the first step of canonization. If I’m reading things correctly, all saints are beatified, though not all those who are beatified become saints.

If the media would just stop showing it (and the Dems didn’t stand up a select committee), it could be deep-sixed from the political mindscape. They’re just so darn inconsiderate to a craven political figure’s needs.

More seriously, I’d say they are trapped by surrendering to Trump. An analogy that I’m working on is sort of like they used a mine-laying aircraft to drop bombs, let Trump sit in the pilot’s chair and he promptly crashed them into the middle of the field. So now, they are stranded deep in a mine field of their own creation and there are no good options for getting out. If they try to walk back to the line of sanity, their own bombs will take them out (Trumpites will primary them, or worse). So their chosen play is to huddle in place and hope that somehow the rest of the country won’t hold them responsible and someone will somehow come along and lead them out safely.

This all almost makes me wish there were two of her so we could watch the other one get shot too.

Fitting they couldn’t even spell her name right. Rest in Peace indeed.

I have no sympathy for Ashli Babbitt.
None.
Zip.
Zero.

But it’s worth studying how she (and others) got to be so utterly fucked up that she believed it was a good idea to try to overthrow the elected government.

Isn’t it interesting that it took them over six months to start acting like they give a shit about her?

I guess that’s what you call walking back your double-down. But I have a feeling a lot of people are not that forgiving of sedition supporters.
