How New Mexico Jump Started Aggressive COVID-19 Testing | Talking Points Memo

In much of the country, even those with COVID-19 symptoms are struggling to get tested for the virus. But in New Mexico, an extremely rural and low income state, the governor announced last week that certain residents without symptoms can now get tested.

Michelle Lujan Grisham has done this exactly right from Day 1.

She could be the first Native American President as well as the first woman in the office.

Look what happens when people actually rely on science to shape policy.

Democratic leadership in action. This is what happens when you vote for smart, competent, caring people versus voting for lying con men. Well done NM!

MLG isn’t “Native American.” Rep. Debra Haaland is.

Gavin Newsom, you have the facilities, so fix testing in California. Having a third of the testing rate of New Mexico is not good enough, nor is drive-through testing when the tests aren’t getting processed (Quest). You have the greatest bioscience capability and minds in the country, so use what you’ve got. And don’t just compare your performance to other states. Finland has already launched its national antibody testing program on a trial basis. Every Californian needs to be tested, preferably multiple times, to reestablish functional communities.

Yes she is. You need to see her biography. The Lujan is from Taos Pueblo and she is a 12th generation New Mexican. At least that is her claim and that’s how she ran her gubernatorial race.

Until last week, only New York, Washington and Louisiana were turning around more tests on a per capita basis than New Mexico, according to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

What do these four states have in common? Hmm…can’t quite put my finger on it…

People in Louisiana really dodged a bullet, considering their proclivity for electing Republicans. They should count their blessings, instead they’ll probably sit home counting their bullets.

Hardly anyone is getting tested in Texas and results take 3 weeks in some instances.

The advantage she’s had is watching and learning from what’s happened in the states affected early. Main lesson being expect nothing (in fact, less than nothing) from the federal government.

Kudos to the Governor for being smart, a quick study, and getting it right.

Have they sufficiently thanked and praised Dr. Toadglans yet? I guess we’ll find out when he hate-tweets Governor Lujan Grisham.

Greetings from Taos. We’ve been proud of how our progressive state officials have responded. If we could only keep the red staters from showing up to vacation. I’m looking at you Iowans & Texans. Hey, we love ya, but not right now. Our first case was from the ski valley from an east coast vacationer who decided not to cancel his plans in mid March.

Yes we know. I’m not a tourist - I have house and casita behind Guads on the north and I live there as many months of the year as I live here.

But I wouldn’t think of leaving this hot zone and going anyplace else. It would be the height of irresponsibiity.

I suspect Red River is where you need to put out the barriers to keep the Republican Texans from showing up.

Michelle Lujan Grisham is of Mexican-American ancestry. Her forebears in New Mexico are said to go back 12 generations, to the original Spanish settlers in the 17th century–back to Mayflower/Plymouth Rock times. And she could really help bring Latinx voters to the polls in critical states like Arizona and Texas.

She is a former Congresswoman and state health commissioner. I have heard only good things about her political talent.

Joe Biden: Put her on your short list for VP.

Without checking, I would wager the Governor has a D next to their name…

Am I right?

Then why did she show photographs of Taos Natives when she talked about her family when she was running for the governorship?

This woman is spending more time looking out for her constituents while Trump tweets his daily grievances and wastes time and bandwidth on “The Five O’clock Follies”.

Gov MLG has had much experience with the medical and social services aspects of government and for-profit industries. This has helped. Also, she knows how to communicate, both to cajole and fluff when needed but is fierce and persistent as an angry chihuahua. She’s had to clean up an incredible mess of “starving the beast” from 8 years of Susana Martinez (R, naturally) but has definitely been up to the challenge.

From what I read in the local rag (Albuquerque Journal), she’s dutifully buttered him up while firmly insisting that the state’s needs be met. Like I said, she’s smart.
