Let’s say situation doesnt look good at all…
I hope, but am not confident, that people get what is going on. Maybe there will be a delayed but exponential growth in awareness very very soon. Which includes things like shopping for groceries. We are in this for what is effectively going to be a long time, and there is no food shortage – except one temporarily brought about by people hoarding completely unnecessarily, out of fear – and selfishness.
This leaves out a crucial advantage of flattening the curve that has been mentioned elsewhere: the development of treatments such as anti-virals or antibody serums and ultimately a vaccine. Since there are treatments partially developed for earlier varieties of coronavirus, there’s a bit of a head start. The development of such treatments and in the case of antivirals potential prophylaxis, could cut the whole thing much shorter without the need for herd immunity.
The growth is still exponential, you are trying to change the doubling rate…
I wonder how the US would have reacted had this been like other flu pandemics. The flu typically affects both the young and old severely. Would public attitude be different if children were also being thrown under the bus like the older generations? Somehow I doubt it. Ageism is an issue here.
The hoarding is not only selfish but counterproductive. If you’ve got 20 bottles of Purell (or bleach, or tissue or disinfecting wipes) because you bought every one that was on the shelf at CVS or the supermarket, that’s 19 other people who don’t have any. And if people around you are all sick, you’re going to get sick, too, no matter how much Purell you’ve hoarded. Don’t be the jerk who empties a full shelf of something we all need. We’re in this together.
Exponential growth in awareness! The faster the rate the better.
It is what it is. Protect yourself and your loved ones, and avoid the idiots at all costs.
No, no, no. That overwhelms the health care system.
Some interesting changes in behavior will likely come about as a result of all this. Maybe people will remember that they can cook meals from basic ingredients. For example, all the bread has been bought. However, it is actually possible to make your own bread!
Dough!
It is a matter of saving lives. I want to be a round to see my grandson grow and thrive. That is not too much to ask for.
I guess since there is something of opera in all this, the Met is Streaming free operas every night this week from their terrific Met in HD series.
Edit: I’ll try this in off hours, the traffic is killing the stream.
I suspect the number of cases will also diminish with increased social distancing but you are right the wave of cases will be lower and hopefully won’t overwhelm the system. The percentage of hospitalizations is frightening. Seventeen to twenty percent is enormous when you are expecting tens of millions of infections. The hospitalizations won’t be for just a few days. The Chinese report people are on ventilators for up to two weeks.
No it’s not.
Um, I mean in awareness amongst the population of what is going on, of people actually getting – as in understanding – what is going on. That faster that accelerates the better.
Britain finally changed their strategy to one of delay, expected to last 18 months. Seems they’ve finally realized that hundreds of thousands of deaths was unacceptable.
My wife and I are here in Florida sheltering in place in our apartment. Our kids and grandkids are far away. I think we have a much better chance of making through this pandemic here than we would back in our home city.
I wonder if Limbaugh still thinks covid is nothing more than a cold because they are both caused by species of the virus genus called coronavirus
