The cognitive dissonance of seeing Pence treated as a patriotic hero of Jan 6 is going to kill me.

To be fair, Pence did what he was supposed to do under the Constitution and didn’t entertain doing anything contrary to that which would help Trump. It’s why Trump was so enraged. So, from that perspective, he was actually being a patriot…yes, I think he sucks too, but he deserves credit for doing the right thing that day.

The House managers are telling a good story where Pence was targeted by Trump for assassination, and that’s backed up by the chants to hang him. They won’t get mileage out of telling Republicans that the mob was after Pelosi and AOC…telling them that it was after Pence, and showing them video of their own frantic evacuation, will reach them emotionally. Even if they vote to acquit, they will still feel that…that’s why assholes like Hawley are ignoring the proceedings, they can’t handle being faced with the truth.

I disagree, he’s no patriot. He had no power under the Constitution to do anything that would help Trump, like tossing the EC count and naming Trump the winner. He doesn’t deserve any credit for not doing something he wasn’t able to do in the first place!

And then he gave tacit approval to Trump’s actions during the day, by denouncing the rioters later that night as if they appeared out of thin air with no connection to Trump.

I have no doubt that everyone expressing some hope/thoughts that some minds were changed is well aware that assholes like Thune and Lee won’t be one of them.

I don’t actually see it so much the “changing minds” as it is driving a wedge between the Old Guard and the Trumpers. If we can get that process rolling along then next election we’re facing two parties “in disarray” and while waiting for the Old Guard to sort themselves out, we can get some stuff done that should have already been done by now.

I also think this is but one milestone in this process. I do still believe there will be criminal indictments, and when the first of those are issued, these two groups get to have another “choosing sides” moment. And then, as the indictments pile up and we get a first (probably somewhat minor, because it went faster than the others) conviction, the schism should be in full “cliffside falling into the sea” mode.

And finally, since it’s Friday and I’m prognosticating, I do predict that it’s the Old Guard (reinforced by all those “Independents” who’d fled the Crazies) that’s we’ll be dealing with as the “other party”, while the Crazies will return to their McMansions and their trailer parks to resume nursing their grievances and awaiting their next Messiah.

But boy, the next year or two does have the potential to suck a lot. Hold fast, folks - it does have the potential to get better under President Harris…
