A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the members of Rep. Jim Jordan’s already notorious subcommittee that is running interference for coup plotters, Trump, and his own members under federal investigation by targeting the Justice Department, FBI, and other “Deep State players:
I’m PROUD to announce that I’ve been chosen for the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus pandemic. Every LIE told to us by Fauci will be revealed. Every LIE about the vaccine will be revealed. Every LIE that was used to LOCK YOU DOWN will be unearthed. We will reveal the TRUTH!
Of particular interest: Santos indicated on the new filings that he was not the source of the funds of personal loans he made to his campaign. But he doesn’t indicate who was?
The change was baffling to campaign finance experts:
Oh, I can think of a possible reason for the change. Someone close to Santos should tell him to lawyer up fast and shut up fast, because like him trying to do his own paperwork for his Florida corporation, he’s gonna screw it up and dig himself deeper.
Politico reports that some House GOP defectors combined with staunch Democratic support may make it hard for Speaker McCarthy to boot Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the Foreign Affairs Committee.
The sad thing is, I can no longer tell if that’s parody or official Republican policy/ a real statement from Ronny Jackson. The Onion must be running on fumes.
Ronny Lynn Jackson is an American physician, politician, and retired United States Navy rear admiral who is the U.S. representative for Texas’s 13th congressional district. Jackson joined the White House Medical Unit in the mid-2000s under George W. Bush, and served as Physician to the President from 2013 to 2018 under Barack Obama and Donald Trump. On March 28, 2018, Trump nominated Jackson to be United States secretary of veterans affairs to succeed David Shulkin. On April 23, 2018, allegations of misconduct and mismanagement during his service in the White House were reported. The administration disputed the allegations. Concern was also expressed about Jackson’s lack of management experience. On April 26, 2018, Jackson withdrew his nomination as Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
But only 25 campaign committees reported any single expense costing exactly $199.99, POLITICO’s analysis found. No campaign other than Santos’ spent that specific amount more than four times. And Santos’ campaign spent that exact figure 37 times, according to his campaign finance reports, totalling just shy of $7,400.
One detail Politico missed: almost all the $199.99 line items occurred in Q4 2021, they almost completely stopped after that. The entire campaign spent about $3 million. Why put everything under the microscope for the sake of a lousy $7400 of what looks like structuring?
