The 118th Congress is off to a predictably chaotic and humiliating start under Republican control. It’s day two and there’s no speaker, no rules in place for the House and certainly no committees. House Republicans did manage to do one thing: tear down those pesky magnetometers installed after the Jan. 6 attack.
I believe there were three rounds of voting yesterday. I saw a headline about MAGATs in disarray and another about a circular firing squad. You have to enjoy the rewards of silly.
McCarthy refused to entertain the idea that Jordan, the detractors’ pick, would actually become speaker. He noted he’s a “very big fan” of Jordan’s but said he does not have enough support.
It’s a sentiment the “Only Kevin” crowd echoed after leaving the House floor. Rep. Don Bacon (Neb.) said that while Jordan is a “nice man” and “made a good team with Kevin McCarthy,” it’s not worth accommodating “a small group that essentially have you hostage, and that’s what’s going on here.”
In response to Bacon jokingly telling reporters that the defectors should be called the “Taliban 20,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) tweeted, “Well….as hurtful and false as that is….I too am prepared for an extended battle that I will ultimately win.”
At the beginning of the day, Rep. Steve Womack (Ark.) reflected on the vitriol that had flared dramatically, and publicly, within the Republican conference. Asked how a staunch conservative and institutionalist like him felt, he became visibly emotional.
“I don’t know how to answer the question. Really. I just hurt for the institution. It’s painful,” he said.
And as an adult, what are you going to do about it, Rep. Womack? How much do you care? Really.
I do hope that Democratic members are taking their Republican friends (yes, it’s possible) out for a few or 10 drinks and discussing the many advantages of switching their votes to Hakim Jeffries. Everybody knows that the “Freedumb Caucus” is destroying the Republican Party; maybe they can do something about it?
And also… LOBBY FOR A SECRET VOTE next time. Because it’s been well established that Today’s Republicans are spineless.
“I don’t know how to answer the question. Really. I just hurt for the institution. It’s painful,” [Womack] said.
That’s the funniest damn thing I’ve read yet! People invade the Capitol while waving a traitorous Confederate flag, no biggie. But a few speaker votes, and he’s got the feels for “the institution.”
Memories of the early 90s in California when the Republicans held 41 of 80 State Assembly seats and Willie Brown held on to the Speakership by getting a couple Republicans to cross over…
