It is my understanding that there is no requirement for the Speaker of the House to be a member of the House.

That is someone could nominate Donald Trump or even Newt Gingrich and if they get enough votes, I am just not sure what the pay would be for a Speaker who is not a member.

TFG being nominated Speaker would definitely worry me as he’d be 3rd in line for POTUS. I would not put anything past him or his minions.

On the plus side, he’d have a hell of a commute from FL and less time devoted to golf, so it’s pretty unlikely.

She (Pelosi) told reporters that the situation “speaks for itself” as she left the House floor on Tuesday.

Seems as though Speaker Pelosi’s stiletto hasn’t lost its edge, even absent the gavel.

Gaetz writes a smarmy letter demanding that Keven McCarthy not occupy or use the Speaker’s office becasue he is not yet Speaker.

He signs the letter as a “Member of Congress.”

He is not a Member of Congress. He is a “Representative-Elect.” (None of the 434 people voting for Speaker are Members of Congress. No one can be sworn in until there is a Speaker.)

Once again pure performance based on igrnorance. It shall be ever so with these people.

Seriously, how many potential GOP cross-overs are there, for speaker or regular votes? If there’s at least half a dozen, then Speaker Jeffries is not out of the question, provided that Dems cut deals with the crossovers and live up to them (such deals NOT including promising to not run viable candidates against them in '24). Alternatively, these crossovers could use the threat of crossing over to vote for Jeffries to compel enough never-Kevins to elect him as speaker (with deals cut in exchange for them not crossing over). We are not living through normal times and the regular rules just don’t apply.

The Reps have had all night to reload their FootGun™. Let’s see how their aim is today.

Yes to this. But also, the speakership requires some command of organizational skills in order to be effective just in the abstract–never mind power and stuff–and Trump doesn’t have time or patience for that kind of thing.

Are licensed guns allowed in DC, open carry or concealed, and if not, do these laws apply to the Capitol?

And how do you think the answer to that question might evolve after five failed votes? Ten? The first week? The second…?

Does anyone have a tally handy of how many GOP rep-elects are from Biden districts?

Addendum: What if a certain indictment drops (on @txlawyer’s timeline, for example) before they can even create a committee to investigate the investigators?

Not just districts that voted for Biden, but ones that came close to doing so. I.e. both solidly blue AND swing districts that elected GOP reps. There have got to be at least a dozen, maybe more. People still split tickets, bless 'em.

I think this link should be sent to every GOP member of the House. On the hour, every hour until they finally get their speaker.
