The “god” worshipped by many “christians” in this countries IS a sociopath and sadist.
I swore off religion around age 4 so I’m happy not to worry about all that.
This, indeed, was one of their greatest fears - and the ink was barely dry on the founding documents when factionalism began to rise and take root. And in those days, only rich white men could vote!
I listened to a long discussion yesterday about how history might regard this period in our history. They talked about the one bought and sold vote that caused the impeachment of Andrew Johnson to fail to expel him. Johnson is a good example, since he spent all of his presidency trying to reverse the results of the Civil War and undoing Lincoln’s legacy. And even though he was not re-elected as president, what he did do allowed the South to create and codify Jim Crow policies that prolonged horrendous racial inequality to this very day. He was a crude man who vilified his political opponents in a way very reminiscent of our current president. And most people in America today do not know who Andrew Johnson was or what he did, much less the Senator whose vote saved him from being expelled. The evil done tends to go on for centuries while the evil-doer is forgotten by most.
So if you look far enough into the future, I don’t think historians will be talking about who voted for what. I think that the consensus opinion will be that while factionalism, greed, racial and economic disparity continued to undermine American democracy in a trend that had been ongoing since the mid-20th century, the larger forces of global warming overtook the ability of the world to take any significant actions to ameliorate it and new global forces arose that rendered the United States a lesser player in the second half of the 21st century. Whether we can change direction in any significant way or just continue on this path to becoming a complete and corrupt kleptocracy will be up to the next few generations.
I, for one, am more than ready for women, POC and the younger generations to take the reins now.
True enough. It is an anthropomorphic god who shares their likes, but mostly their dislikes, and is as petty and vindictive as a petulant child. It’s no wonder they have found their messiah the small-handed vulgarian.
How did you know I am Irish?
It’s now their brand.
Or a psychologically necessary projection…
(A dem holdout)
In Az I do believe that Martha McSally® will surrender her office to Kelly(D) partly because she has tied herself to the dotardian cult.
Yes, we all can rationalize just about anything to protect our already formed opinions. Like I said yesterday, the ability to recognize when you are wrong and change course is actually a rarity, although most of us believe that absolutely does not apply to us personally. There is an entire industry devoted to helping people who vote against their own interests continue to feel good and moral about those votes.
All that matters is power—and remaking the federal courts in Trump’s image.
Not small-handed.
Short-fingered.
There is a huge difference.
x 1,000 mr. newman!! That’s the real fear for me. Those 60 million of my fellow muricans who voted for the buffoon and continue to support him.
I think it’s even simpler. I’ll get called a pessimist, but what am I missing here? They smell unchecked power, and they want it. You eliminate meaningful congressional oversight by acquitting the Mutant-in-Chief. You get a 6-3 court should our national treasure RBG die. Tighten up the gerrymandering and vote suppression, interfere with the 2020 elections, and you realize the dream of a unified government in thrall to the .1%. We still have the same flag, but it’s a Republican country. The rest of us just live in it until they get tired of the irritant.
They will do it because they can. The more they get away with, the bolder they become. And the president is about to get away with being an open criminal.
OT, but a good read and topic for discussion.
.
The parties owned their own newspapers and they were a volatile and ugly mix of made-up scandals, vicious and accusatory rhetoric, and content shaded to conform to party positions.
How did one avoid becoming a target of their vitriol? By remaining bland, malleable, and largely unnoticed. They forced those who couldn’t become their party hacks to at least float around in the mushy middle.
None of this was good. Bad faith became the operative political morality of the day.
The resistance is alive and well in a new generation. Olds like us will die out and they will rule the day. We may not see it in our lives, and the republicans may yet destroy us all, but if our country survives, it will be free once again.
ALL three of our kids are scientists. All are pursuing paths to bring them into policy making circles. All of them are hella tired of this bullshit and know (or are learning) what’s needed to turn our society around.
That isn’t nothing and it’s something to put hope in. Our kids don’t have the patience with this shit that we did, not do they have old angry white men in such numbers that they can do anything about it in say 10 years or so.
Declaration of Subservience
We the undernamed and the Americans we represent, in having declared fealty to Donald J Trump and all he stands for, and yielding reason, facts, understanding and logic to the musings of the KGB, Vladimir Putin and the will of mother Russia, do hereby declare the power of the presidency is for personal use, enrichment, revenge, and subverting the Constitution of the United States. We sign this statement with pride knowing history will record our names alongside American luminaries such as Benedict Arnold. We accept full ownership of the outcome of this willing subservience. Oh, and it’s only OK when a Republican does it.
