You’re misreading that. They’re complaining that the FTX implosion has done damage to cryptocurrency’s reputation, and it has. But the FTX implosion was less about cryptocurrency and more a combination of Bear Stearns (overexposure to their own toxic product), Enron (“we’re the smartest people in the room”), and MF Global (shifting customer funds to other brokerages where they could take riskier bets with it).

IIRC, the problem with the long time friend is that the woman involved refuses to testify. The DoJ can’t bring charges without that witness.
Of course there had to be much more going on than with this one individual, but she seems to be central to nailing Gaetz.
