A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Back in early 2019, after Democrats won the House and were poised to start holding Donald Trump accountable, I cautioned our staff that these things take time, so don’t be impatient and don’t rush to judge the pace of accountability.
Seems like some sharp staffers could quickly identify some of Trump’s more egregious tax cheats and hand someone draft legislation for next term (even though of course it won’t go anywhere), as a means of keeping the issue from being completely buried. Yes, the clock is mostly run out, but a hasty report pointing out several likely criminal violations (selected release) along with a simple “all candidates for the executive branch must release the most recent 7 years of tax returns” rule might do the trick.
What can be done with the tax returns? Have the Senate launch an investigation, release them publicly, print out miniature copies for use as holiday napkins.
It’s been interesting to see the right try to change the contents of the first amendment so that the “Congress shall make no law…” part is understood to mean that “no one can hurt the fee fees of conservative speakers” nor can anyone choose not to use a specific avenue for speech if it negatively impacts a conservative’s chance to profit.
I’m guessing that when the GOP holds their performative reading of the Constitution there will be no requirement for any of them to actually listen or comprehend.
I think the word “deadlocked” in this article means that most of the voters have decided which candidate they like and still plan on voting for that candidate. Pretty much boils down to getting the votes out and I believe it’s happening already.
Overlooking his lack of intelligence and experience, his whacko conspiracy theories, his transparent lying, his sex-addiction, and abandonment of his many kids, I think Duncan may be on to something.
But Duncan would rather Walker be someone ELSE’S puppet, so his statement is highly hypocritical.
QOTD – Stick A Fork In It, Even Before It’s Done
"… [RNC Chairperson Ronna Romney ] McDaniel announced that the panel will be packed with Trump-friendly right-wingers, including longtime Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, Trump-endorsed tech-bro Blake Masters — who just lost his Arizona Senate race — and Christian-right lobbyist and anti-abortion zealot Tony Perkins, along with newly-elected Trump endorsees like Sen.-elect Katie Britt of Alabama, Rep.-elect Monica De La Cruz of Texas and Rep.-elect John James of Michigan.
“Anyone who thinks that particular group will be ‘charting a new path’ needs to have another think again. This autopsy will almost certainly find a way to affirm that Republicans lost because they weren’t Trumpy enough. To reach any other conclusion would amount to repudiating the party’s base voters and the slightly tarnished Dear Leader they still worship.” – Heather Digby Parton, on the “autopsy” commissioned to tell them why, other than about 35% of the population, nobody likes them and how they can change that [spoiler alert: they can’t]. (They could start with the question of why the greedy Malignant Loser withheld $94 million from his chosen candidates). This “autopsy” should meet the same fate as the 2013 “autopsy,” which is currently sitting on former RNC Chairperson Reince Priebus’s shelf nourishing bookworms.
