A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Darren Bailey, the Trump-endorsed Republican nominee for Illinois governor, put out a video about the July 4 parade shooting in Highland Park which urged people to “pray for justice to prevail,” and “then let’s move on and let’s celebrate the independence of this nation.”
“He didn’t seem to post much about politics” other than being at a Trump rally and a pic wrapped in a Trump flag… Sounds like he had a political affiliation to me (as if we didn’t already know the minute this news came out)
Guns are one of the huge reasons the US will never be normal again. It’s been going on for over 20 years, nothing has been done, nothing will be done. It’s normal, get over it everyone.
Re: Ms. Griner: While I’m very sympathetic generally, and despise Russia greatly, Ms. Griner carried a known illegal substance(one that I use often!) across borders, including Russia’s. How fricken stupid does one have to be to do this? Where is her personal responsibility? Now some vile murderer or poisoner, who will kill and maim more humans, will escape punishment for her freedom. Of course she is trying to put Biden into a bind with Black folks and women. She disgusts me.
I’ve lost all heart. The fact that at least 30% of our population is made up of crazies, the huge homeless population, we can’t pretend to keep up with any of it.
This will never be the country I knew 30 years ago, completely uncivilized.
The country coming out of a massive crime wave fed by lead poisoning of the population, “three strikes” laws putting non-violent criminals behind bars for life, Spandex?!?
I think 95% of regular TPM commenters would agree that our current gun laws are ridiculous. There shouldn’t be so many guns and no one should be able to own an AR 15. I am beginning to think the gun problem may have much deeper roots than I realized. I was reading some comments on a Washington Post thread that emphasized the oversized rights that gun owners enjoy. Basically, any right-leaning 18 year old literally has the ‘power of life and death’ over his community, and he is likely to direct it against people he feels are his political enemies.
Many of the commenters lamented the lack of safety. I learned in an intro psychology course that the strongest controller of behavior is the fear of random violence. The constant threat of random violence is apparently what the SC backed right wants to impose over the liberal majority.
“Let’s move on” is pretty frank about how you make some perfunctory noises about mass killings until it all blows over. Natural step in the evolution on this.
“Big machines to make big decisions,
Programmed by fellas with compassion and vision.
We’ll be clean when their work is done;
We’ll be eternally free and eternally young, ooooh.”
