Oversight should absolutely NOT be in congress. If the GQP were overseeing it at the time and knew they were, they would have arranged for the insurrection to succeed. Hand it to the military or find some similarly non-partisan way to do it. The GQP CANNOT BE TRUSTED. PERIOD.
What about him? Zelensky was a comedian in a tv show on one of the main Ukrainian stations which was owned by Kolomoisky, that’s pretty much where his whole fame and ultimate run from playing president on TV to somehow being elected actual president came from.
(Likely due to russian fucking with the election, but backfired when they tried to test him in the breakaway regions by offering russian passports to Ukrainians living there, which forced him back under control of the Ukrainian nationalists and at loggerheads with russia, where they remain today).
DC Statehood would still avoid seats of federal power. Capitol Police will still secure the Capitol Building and the grounds part of the campus, even if the DC Metro became a state.
The real insight is that when we have members controlling a branch of government, the other branches need to be defended not only from authorization of misconduct but also misconduct through negligence of duty. The executive should care about the security of the other branches, but what if it doesn’t? How would Congress or the Court defend itself, theoretically from Kamala Harris turning a blind eye to all the antifa and baby eaters coming for the Matt Gaetzes and Gym Jordans or Kavenaugh? Should the Speaker of the House and the Chief Justice have authority to request National Guard reinforcement?
We are hopefully not missing an opportunity to use Trump’s strength-testing the federal government as a way to reinforce it.
Bolton, the inspector general, has been releasing “flash reports” on the security meltdown, including an explosive one earlier this month revealing that officers were instructed not to use their most aggressive tactics even when it was clear that Congress was a potential target.

No congressional, i.e. political, commission can possibly be adequate in today’s poisonously partisan climate. There must be a commission, and it must be independent from partisan influence. Perhaps the best way would be to have a panel of retired federal judges - selected from a panel consisting ONLY of those who receive a majority vote from all retired judges appointed by BOTH Democratic and Republican presidents. The commission should have subpoena power, and adequate staffing and other resources. It should look at not only what happened, but also at what led up to the crowd being there on that day of days, That would mean looking at the effects of Donald Trump’s Big Lie and invitation to his followers to be there, and his not so cryptic call to be wild.

Even if DC had statehood, the Capitol would still be protected by its own security force. There’s still the problem of responsibility within the force.
