A high school in Fairfax County, Virginia named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee is poised to change its name to honor the late Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who was at the forefront of the fight for civil rights.
Well, the one in NYC has a big-ass āBlack Lives Matterā out front. When heās back home meeting with his lawyers he can take frequent breaks and admire it at his leisure.
Iām assuming Donnieās not going to be at liberty to be bothered by this for too long.
Nonetheless, wherever analogous changes can be made, it is justice served.
It makes me shudder to think of how many millions consider this tiny light in the darkness a personal affront, but it is my feel good story of the day. And that is true for the majority of sane Americans.
This is such a well-deserved honor for a great man, and I support it wholeheartedly.
But let me also say, while weāre doing the important work of renaming schools, highways, buildings, and bridges, letās not let the establishment off the hook in terms of our criminal justice system, healthcare, education, and job opportunities as well. We need not just symbolic change, but also structural change.
PS: I donāt mean to imply that any progressive has forgotten. This just a reminder that we still have a lot of important work in front of us.
There aināt nearly enough schools named for W. T. Sherman either.
Note to casual Googlers: āSherman High Schoolā in Sherman, TX most emphatically does not count. The town of Sherman has certain historical issues of its own there.
