I don’t put much faith in that poll. MAGATs listen to a poll question and ask themselves “which answer best expresses my loyalty to Trump?”. Progressive democrats listen to a question and ask themselves “which answer best expresses my hatred of Trump and my equal contempt for all his enablers, including the feckless loser democrats who still haven’t done sh*t about him?” Neither is honestly expressing a perception of their understanding of what happened. This is so very true. I bet if you asked 1,000 Americans who is the Speaker of the House, the Majority Leader, and minority leaders in the House and Senate, maybe 25% could answer correctly. Ask them to name five SCOTUS justices and that number probably drops even lower.

Their own rep and senators too. The actual political engagement of the average person is close to nil. What you have are fans. Rabid fans, certainly, but fans is all they are. It’s identity fusion—getting carried away, being the crazy guy on the news with a whole room devoted to memorabilia of the local team, all that. It’s about culture, lifestyle, status, resentment, fear of change, existential angst if you really want to have the full list, all that fun stuff.
