GOP Senator: It’d Be ‘Extremely Inappropriate’ To Immediately Shoot Down Impeachment In Senate | Talking Points Memo

I don’t care what the Senate does. We’re going to beat their asses and win control of the Senate either way.

No kidding, it might be kind of a stain on Americans as a whole if nobody does this. It reminds me of the kinds of details that got noted in history books when I was a kid.

Toomey is trying to play moderate. Its all BS. Recent comments (published 6 Dec 2019):

"‘where is the crime?’“ [on House impeachment hearings]

"I have yet to see something in my mind as a high crime or misdemeanor that warrants overturning the results of the last election.”

Trump’s Ukraine- Biden investigations “inappropriate” but not impeachable.

“I don’t want to go too far on a limb but you probably won’t be surprised by the disposition of this issue [in the Senate].”

(BTW, TPM, Toomey is not a “Colorado Republican”. Unfortunately he is from PA)

I know, but why would they so obviously disqualify themselves and flirt with this kind of trouble? Chump knows they are in his corner, why go on national TV, braying and showing your donkey gums about how bought/sold you are? These guys aren’t total idiots, they have spent their whole lives pretending one thing and doing another, and hiding their true motives. What could ever possess them or spur them on to making such egregious statements that could disqualify them for the trial? Setting up a “mistrial” so there is absolutely no way they can get to a guilty verdict?

din’t think of that avenue.
you might be on to something there. gum up the works so bad people just tune it out and wait for the next election while trump campaigns for all the republicans.

Please, if Graham is your senator email him, send a letter, a fax and tell him for me that I see him as one who has destroyed any reason to be a senator any longer. He is betraying our country by supporting the most corrupt person ever to hold the presidency.

I think it’s partly because they run from gerrymandered districts and are so used to that that the only thing that matters to them now is the primary. Once they win their primary they think they have won their seat. And the people who vote in their primaries are serious RWNJs.

Pat Toomey is my senator, not Graham.

If they’re barred from the trial I’m uncertain how they’d have any standing to declare a mistrial. Not doubt that they’d whine in the style of their Dear Leader however.

So unfair ™

Coup™

Victim™

And generally…

maybe the only Trump-Nabokov comparison that will ever be made. : )

For a supposed tough guy from Queens, trump sure does whine a lot. He even beats up on teenagers and puts toddlers in wire cages. I am insulted to think that millions of my fellow citizens support this corrupt coward.

I know. I doubt there is even a mechanism in this form of “trial” for declaring a mistrial. I was just spitballing, if maybe the Rs were setting up something ahead of time so they could call the whole thing moot in case it wasn’t going how they expected.

I still am against Pelosi letting this get into Moscow Mitch’s villainous clutches. I am hoping against hope they stop worrying about ‘kitchen table’ issues and trying to appear sensible and adult. We’ve been doing that for over 100 years. This is different, this is for all the marbles, and voting to Impeach is important. They can walk and chew gum at the same time. But holding this over Chump’s head for as long as possible is the best move, by far, in my view instead of giving the Rs a chance to dance, mug for the cameras, and revel in rubbing it in Libs faces for the whole 2020 election. I know the Rs won’t look ‘good’ doing it, but there is no chance Chump gets removed so what is the point of letting them do their “piss in your face” over impeachment? Is that going to be a ‘good look’ for the Ds? We need to keep the pressure on, keep them on their heels, issue more subpoenas for Mulvaney and McGahn, get Mueller and McCabe to come testify, pressure the courts to get the tax records, and add more counts.

God I hope so. I really should have thought about that for a minute - but I was thinking of McConnell more than Trump.

Shorter Toomey: I am from PA and Trump is getting unpopular there so I must show show some backbone. However I voted for Trump and will do so again.

Did I miss something?
How would the Senate shoot down Impeachment? Ain’t impeachment a House process? Guess Toomey is referring to Removal but…how did this slip past the interviewer?

Agreed.

This is worth posting again…it’s a good read with a great synopsis of what the Dems face in 2020. I’ll request that @khyber900 make his post available here. It;s just that it’s much cleaner and less emotional to discuss things like this in The Hive. After all… @khyber900 has a live to live beyond replying to hundreds of responses, some more worthy of a response than others.

Gerrymandering is moot for US Senators - they represent the entire state at large.

Yes times a kajillion. When repubs scream, say we’ll forward the articles to the senate after the subpoenaed individuals testify AND when DT stops breaking laws (sorry, might be a repeat of an earlier comment).
