GOP Sen. Toomey Calls Trump Offenses ‘Impeachable’ | Talking Points Memo

Repulican Sen. Pat Toomey (PA)  said on Saturday that he believed President Donald Trump had “committed impeachable offenses” after the President incited what turned into a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol earlier this week.

Its easy to be for impeachment when they know they won’t have to actually vote.

The number of Republican Senators supporting this is growing. I would not be at all surprised if Trump really were removed by Tuesday.

The more Republicans sign on to impeachment, the more likely it is that their party will continue to have influence nationally.

This is the Republicans chance to destroy Trump, destroy his reputation, and after four years of sycophancy, look like heroes who stood up to a tyrant. It is, in short, fucking golden. Don’t miss this opportunity.

I thought that if the Dems and Repub allies can force a vote in the senate then the rest of the Repubs would be forced to take a short vacation.

And furthermore, you Trump Supporters: This is your opportunity too. You can show us all how vile you are, by voting in support of the mob of insurrectionists. You will show all of us who you truly are, and we will never forget.

It can’t be long now. What are the bets on when the pardoning begins and when does he resign? I’m stiffing Gamblers Anonymous until the 20th so let’s place some bets.

That’s three who will “consider”. I don’t assume that means they will vote for impeachment, but it could pressure McCOnnell to call a session so that they don’t have to listen to Dems calling them UnAmerican for running away from an egregious issue.

This is why we desperately need term limits. Politicians shouldn’t be making life and death decisions based primarily on whether they’re going to be re-elected or not. Or that they might piss off the MAGAt’s.

If Articles of Impeachment are presented in the House there will be a recorded vote. That puts every GOP representative on record.

If the Articles of Impeachment are passed, then “Upon such articles being presented to the Senate, the Senate shall, at 1 o’clock afternoon of the day (Sunday excepted) following such presentation, or sooner if ordered by the Senate, proceed to the consideration of such articles and shall continue in session from day to day (Sundays excepted) after the trial shall commence (unless otherwise ordered by the Senate) until final judgment shall be rendered.” There is no way out, every GOP senator will be on record.

To paraphrase from the excellent Science Fiction writer Charlie Stross’s blog -
“Maybe the moral hazard of raising crocodiles in the bathtub will become apparent to the Republicans. It’s nice to imagine the boots you may someday get, but when they also can grow up and destroy your house and eat your children…”

What if he tries to pardon the Capitol insurrectionists?

Rubio noted today that 4 years ago the Republicans controlled the Presidency, the house and the Senate. Now they have lost all 3. It might start dawning on them that Trump and the Trumpers aren’t worth it going forward. They need to cut themselves from Trump as soon as they can or there won’t be a Republican party.

The only way for this to work is for enough Republican senators to switch parties (or become independent and caucus with the Democrats) that control immediately changes over to the Democratic Party and Moscow Mitch is no longer in position to block impeachment in the Senate.
