Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) on Sunday said that he supports renaming military bases honoring Confederate generals, contradicting President Trump’s tweet last week that he will “not even consider” changing bases.
Politely disagreeing with the President that we shouldn’t be honoring Confederate generals is the absolute minimum of decency, barely qualifying as decency. And when you think of all the other things that GOP senators have done in the past three years I think he deserves contempt and shame.
I think it’s time to name these installations for people other than those who served in the military.
There are lots of Americans whose achievements should be memorialized and this is a good way to do it.
I suppose we should be pleased whenever one of these pantywaist senators breaks from Hair Furor, but in every single case it will be for self-preservation and not out of principle.
Looks like the GOP senate will divide into two camps – those who think they will need a decent portion of the black vote to be reelected, and those who have written the black vote off.
“A lot of those statues and monuments were put there to kind of declare, ‘We’re not going to integrate,’” Lankford said, according to the New York Times. “I think we should acknowledge that and, say, ‘No, we are.’ And for those that were digging in during the time of Jim Crow, they need to know that time has passed.”
That’s not just politely disagreeing. Especially less than a week before Trump visits his state to hold his first campaign rally in months.
It may not be the fire and brimstone condemnation of Trump, but this is a republican in Oklahoma, so that sort of rhetoric isn’t ever going to happen. But its pretty striking, nonetheless.
Langford was on CNN (I think) on Friday and said pretty much the same thing. I looked at Mrs dont and she had a WTF? look.
Langford is off the reservation and should be punished appropriately.
Let’s not minimize the importance of this moment. We’re actually putting the civil war in the rearview mirror. The cause of white supremacy is dying. White folks are releasing themselves from their hangups over the social change that started in the 50s and 60s and has resulted in massive demographic change and changes in laws and social norms. This means more white voters are available for Dems than at any time since 1964, and our opportunity for massive reforms of the social contract is widening so long as we Dems stick together, don’t make the perfect the enemy of the good, and just vote en masse for Biden and all down ballot Dems. We have a shot at an historic win that could shape the entire century.
It is striking and he is one of first, if not the first to make his opinion known. He is the canary in the coal mine. The rest are watching how he survives. Too little too late in my opinion. They are all guilty.
I very much appreciate Lankford discussing this in terms of the actual history involved instead of jingoistic bullshit like a certain pandering racist in the WH.
