Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), a Trump ally who pushed lies about fraud in the 2020 election and who is now running as New York’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, has been booted from the Independence Party line on the state’s ballot over thousands of invalid petition signatures.
I’ve started a list of all the Democratic candidates from across the country that have been stricken from the ballot this year for having more than 100 invalid signatures. Here it is:
who is now running as New York’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, has been booted from the Independence Party line on the state’s ballot
Something is missing or does not make sense. If he’s running for guv on the GOP ticket, why would he be trying to appear on the Indepenence Party line of the ballot?
NY allows the same candidate to run on multiple lines. I remember decades ago being urged to vote for a city councillor on the green line rather than the dem line. Used to be that Ds were always also on Liberal* and Rs were always also on Conservative but no reason they couldn’t be on 3 or more lines.
So the scam here is the attempt to gain legitimacy for whatever is the ‘Independence’ party
*I believe the L party was killed off by Andrew Cuomo as part of his machinations to keep personal control of state government
OK, weird. It also seems like the parties would have a problem with this. After all, if he wins, which party is he representing? I realize there’s probably not a whole lot of daylight between them, but there must be something because breaking off into a 3rd party is a big risk when it comes to getting votes.
The New York State Board of Elections found earlier this week that of the 52,096 signatures the Zeldin campaign had submitted in its petition to get his name on the Independence Party line, nearly 13,000 were invalid.
All I need you to do is find thirteen thousand, and er, one, signatures. Which, is one more than I have need*.
