You know though, when otherwise moderately competent people are forced to lie for a loony like Trump they’re going to look bad. Trump said Suleimani had designs on the embassy, but that wasn’t grandiose enough, he suddenly decided, so he declares that actually it was four-count 'em-four embassies! Wow! They had to zap him! And it’s pure fantasy. Just Trump making it sound good like he’s done for decades, saying whatever he can in the moment to sell you that goddamn car and get it and you the hell off the lot. Esper just says he hasn’t seen evidence that four embassies were theatened but he believes Trump. We know it’s nonsense, and he knows we know, and we know he knows we know. Might as well ask the next question, right?

At this point, it would just be easier, and probably end the media questioning, if they all just said, “Yeah, we decided to assassinate a couple of high level government officials (remember, the one in Yemen failed - not sure what that guy had to do with the ‘imminent threats on 4 embassies’) of a country we’re not at war with on other countries’ sovereign land. And it probably violated international and U.S. law, and put thousands of Americans at risk. But, so what? Trump! MAGA! USA! Seig Heil!”

To me it’s more conventional ass-covering and the traditional D.C. thing of speaking to two or more audiences simultaneously with different messages for each. He’s telling the sensible people he isn’t gonna make it up. But he’s telling MAGAworld he’s not there to rock the boat. Trying to split the difference and of course we all wish him luck with that.
