Is there really nothing he can do? How about something as little as an ethics code for SCOTUS justices? Maybe it’s not much, but at least it’s a start. How about setting strict criteria for recusals instead of leaving it to each justice to decide for themselves?
Couldn’t Roberts be at all proactive in defending the Court’s integrity? Are his hands so completely tied as to render him as much a bystander as I am?
“Thomas threatened that she would not help the RSC, the largest caucus of conservatives in Congress, if she did not see its members “out in the streets” and in the fight”
Today’s gop, controlled by fascists, has made it clear they intend to rip apart the fabric of american society by whatever means necessary. The ‘freedom caucus’ envisions a society allowing all the freedom of a psychotic strength straight jacket.
The only ‘freedom’ they truly endorse, at this point anyway, is the freedom to bear arms. And for them it’s more of a requirement than a freedom. And if they should ever again actually take total control of our government we’ll see how long the right to bear arms remains in place. It’ll be reserved for the enforcement arm of the fascist cult and certainly not a right for the average citizen.
Violence and sedition as legitimate political discourse? Hard to ignore their plans for our country.
I don’t think religion explains it, but I definitely think she was as motivated by fear of losing the white patriarchy as those who stormed the Capitol. For a lot of these assholes, 2020 was the last stand between a progressive America and a return to the the white male power structure. They’re literally fighting progress, diversity, and inclusion. It’s an existential crisis for them because they know there aren’t a lot of elections left for them to win before the power of the changing demographics of this country are too much to turn back the tide. Keeping Trump in office would have at least held off the rising political power of “others,” if not stop it in its tracks for another decade. They knew that and that’s why they were desperate to keep him in office. Plus, she may be acutely aware that her husband might not be able to survive two terms of a Dem presidency. Maybe Clarence was planning to step down had Trump won a second term, which would’ve solidified the Conservative hold on the SCOTUS for decades, but now it’s all up in the air. The entire project, her life’s work might have all been for nothing.
there is already a Code of Judicial Conduct that judges all over the country are supposed to follow, just as there is a Code of Professional Conduct that all lawyers are supposed to follow. Thomas hasn’t been following judicial ethics at all. He could be impeached by the Legislature but there really isn’t anything Roberts can do. I mean he can have a talk with him but it’s just a talk.
The hardest thing to grapple with is the reality that none of this is because they don’t think Biden got more votes. It’s because, at root, they think a Democratic president is fundamentally illegitimate and the political desires of 82+ million voters should be discounted because their 74+ million voters are “true Americans” and more deserving of representation in the political process.
The reason I asked about a code of conduct is my understanding is that it applies to all federal judges except SCOTUS. If so, it’s quite an oversight. By which I mean undersight.
It is becoming a time in our history where it is not enough that one can freely practice their religion without fear of reprisal, but that we must bow down to their form of religious practice.
Trump had a rally in Georgia yesterday and hardly anyone came, to start with. And then he threatened to boycott the midterms with his MAGA. Now is he a liability or just a freak show? I would suggest he’s tearing the GOP apart - so he’s an asset for the Democrats. hahahahahahahahaha
Or perhaps the anger and frustration that there are millions of people out there who live happy and productive lives who don’t believe as they do or, horrors, don’t believe at all. Ultimately, I think, like any sort of dogmatism, religion, especially extreme religion, is a numbers game.
Well the truth of the matter is that the masses have been steadily rejecting religion for decades. We’re catching up with Europe in that respect. That’s why the evangelicals and fundamentalists have gotten so militant. @ralph_vonholst
The only problem that I see with this part is that his followers will splinter. And some of those splinter groups will become domestic terrorists, more so than now.
Corporations are people. Marriages are legally-defined statuses too, so marriages must be people too. But the people within the marriage are not people, because people have freedom, while couples dutifully follow the exact legal instructions from government to only say and act in regulated ways so as to… keep… their… corporate people brands distinct?
True but they have been boiled down to a toxic concentrate. Wouldn’t it be great if, say, there was something in the Constitution about separating Church and State? Like a metaphorical wall or something? Just spitballing here.
