Hillsdale College, the conservative private school in southern Michigan with a history of shunning government assistance and mandates, is forging ahead with a large-scale commencement ceremony on campus this weekend against the advice of public health officials.
The health officer for the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency said Hillsdale College informed her Tuesday that it is going forward with a weekend of festivities that is expected to draw 2,600 students, family and visitors to Hillsdale — population 8,000 — amid rising cases of the novel coronavirus across the state and in Hillsdale County.

This is the elephant in the room. What happens when college students return to campuses from all across the nation, including virus hotspots? The colleges and universities are mightily trying to develop approaches for re-opening, but, really, will it work? Is it a good idea to bring in these students? I suppose the big college towns will be the first to find out.

The Left and progressives are suffering from a grand delusion if they think for one minute this electorate, and the voting system we have in place, are incapable of putting Trump back in office for a second term. 2016 proved there are at minimum 63,000,000 craven, racist, misogynistic, anti-intellectual, homophobic, xenophobic, ammosexual citizens in this country. We’re surrounded by them. And I will not be the least bit surprised should they return Trump to office. It would be a fitting, deserved end to the republic.

Hillsdale Police Chief Scott Hephner said the police department and city approved the college’s plans to barricade streets for an outdoor commencement.
“I have been told that they have done research, gotten input from epidemiologists, and I believe, have reached out to the state for planning purposes, and their intent is to do it so they’re not in any technical violation,” Hephner said.
To date, Hephner said his police department has not written any tickets for violations of Whitmer’s coronavirus executive orders.
Shirkey said Hillsdale College’s leaders are “very smart and very disciplined.”
“If anybody can pull it off safely, it’s them,” he said.

Scary, I know. But let’s be optimistic that many of them can be redeemed. How? Religion, leadership, Public Service Announcements? Women withholding their favors? We need a Manhattan project for redemption of the white power members, the xenophobic, the self-righteous, and the others. Often, it’s through a crisis that people change. The virus might be it, but it’s too soon to tell.
