Originally published at: Georgia Becomes First State To Mandate Election Intimidation Training for Law Enforcement — But At What Cost?
Election deniers have put states in a position of having to involve law enforcement more heavily in elections this fall. And while it’s a crucial step in the direction of better protecting poll workers and voters after right-wing chaos was injected into the 2020 election, the changes also have the potential to create an environment…
What could possibly go wrong?
“it was important that law enforcement learn what laws they’re going to be expected to enforce if they get called to a polling place”
Lesson One
When a rich Republican tries to vote in two states, shoot them.
I’m not clear on whether this training is focused on preventing voter intimidation or achieving it.
The newly-approved one-hour mandated training…
Of course, that won’t even cover the requirements at the check-in at the poll books. You need much more.
Fun fact – In my wards (former Election Official), the cops brought the box of donuts to the Pollworkers for their breaks. ![]()
Clearly to protect election workers and those standing in line from verbal or physical assault.
In my small-town jurisdiction, there were “distance requirements” prohibiting the placement of signs or solicitation activity within some number of feet from the polling place entrance. (100?)
If you have long lines on Election Day in an urban setting, going outside the door and snaking around a city block, I can see a much different need for voter protection from MAGA/Proud Boy intimidators.
Protect and use Drop-off and Mail-in voting!
Just wondering. Did Ruby and Shay receive an apology from the governor for what they had to endure. IIRC the Secretary of State Raffensperger did.
And here’s the back door into Morning Memo:
I believe that a backdoor link is also needed to get into this comment thread too. I’m hope everyone finds their way.
Oddly enough, even before I became a moderator, I always used the backdoor. It was just easier for me. I keep a tab open for the front page, and a tab open for the Hive. I’ve been doing it that way for as long as I can remember.
There are two links. The first takes you to the forum. The second to the original article. That’s just the way the system reads the URL
From Texas: I would suggest that police can be present but stay in their cruiser. Provide the Election Team with their phone #. I will assume that in Texas or at least my City had a "greeter outside the actual voting area who can tell election staff to CALL for help.
Is anyone else using the log out and log back in method? I am just wondering, because when I do that everything works perfectly for me and I can’t believe I am the only one.
That was back before the gop started to break the seals that established and preserved our republic
Whoever you want to blame, Goldwater, Nixon, AT&T, Reagan, RoveReedAtwaterDelay, Cuban expats, Prescot Bush, Convicted Felon Trump, Satan, Sauron, they’ve really effed it up for all of us. Yes, with lots of help by commission or omission.
My son would not go to vote if there was a cruiser sitting around. He is a young white male, too.
I would not trust any conservative member of law enforcement to implement the law without bias toward the radical right.
So, as a long time election officer in Fairfax County, VA, I can’t imagine a “police presence” in the polls. Nor do I see the training as including “the check-in process.” Virginia appears unique in that we have used optical scan ballots since '08, and there have been very few issues at the polls I’ve been at since then.
We’re trained what can and can’t be done when a voter is voting, and I can’t think of a single instance of intimidation. We’re also trained whom to call if someone gets out of line, but those folks are not “in the polls,” they’re at a nearby police station ready to respond. It’s that response that the Georgia training should address. It’s a worthwhile effort, and we should wait and see the results.
I stopped Election work once I left Wisconsin, in 2012. Moved to a state in the west that does vote-by-mail. I still hand carry my ballot back to the Court House – I have no trust in DeJoy’s Mail COmpany.
We just need one officer to enforce one person don’t be calling up the Secretary of State telling him to find me 11,308 votes or whatever.
It has been working fine for me since day 2, after I cleared TPM cookies from firefox. Of course, my west coast time means I am never frist!
I sit back, and in sadness and bewilderment, think: “It has come to this?”
