The age of pomp and ceremony is over. The monarchy never offered social mobility or opportunities to its younger citizens not born to money. But the caste system is breaking down rapidly in the 21st Century and it’s never going to go back to what it was.
The queen would be smart to hand over her crown to one of her great granddaughters. Charles is too old to relate to the nation’s largely younger subjects and Diana’s sons seem to be as hopeless as she was at pretending that any of it matters.
Diana actually had far more English blood than any of the Windsors. And she would never have been caught dead wearing one of those silly little fascinator hats that were spoofed so unmercifully in the Hunger Games movies. She had style, wit and an attitude which is what the world most loves about the Brits. They do not.
The Firm still hasn’t caught on to any of it. It might survive another century, but it won’t ever be relevant no matter how much charity work they do and fairy tale weddings they put on.
