Behind the advocacy lies a murky web of billionaires,
Of course, it is all the usual suspects - the ultra rich, ultra conservative black hat villains who have pulling strings behind the scenes for decades now to make sure nothing - and I mean nothing - gets in the way of them acquiring more obscene amounts of wealth. Their goals have become the goals of an entire political party - a party that used to favor wealth but now worships it openly and without conscience, morals or ethics. I want to personally thank the Kochs, the Mercers, the DeVos family, Adelson and especially, Rupert Murdoch, and all of their less famous but equally corrupt billionaire buddies, for fucking my country up into something I no longer recognize. There is nothing too cynical, too venal, too underhanded for them to try to further solidify their stranglehold on American politics. Nothing.
There are thousands of useful idiots lined up to take Trump’s place, and the billionaires have all of them in their pockets.
Sooo…Coolidge managed to stave off a major depression–until his successor Herbert Hoover apparently screwed it all up. Hoover only served at Coolidge’s (and Warren G. Harding’s) Secretary of Commerce and had Coolidge’s blessing (ETA: actually, according to Wikipedia, Coolidge didn’t like Hoover, but didn’t want to split the party after he declined to run again). Apparently that kind of context isn’t relevant. If Coolidge managed to hold off a depression, he only did it by sticking a few fingers in the dike.
And on the subject of Woodrow Wilson, it’s not like he predicted WWII or anything. He directly said that the Treaty of Versailles that ended WWI was too draconian and that without a strong international body to watch over things (he created the League of Nations, though the Republicans wouldn’t let the US join it), then Europe was ripe for a repeat.
Which of Coolidge and Wilson were proven right and who was proven wrong? History. How does it work?
Viruses are tricky. I watched an interview with a doctor the other night and he pointed out very esteemed labs have been working on an HIV vaccine for decades, to no avail. He mused it was entirely possible this virus would elude the development of a vaccine also.
Want to see what the search for a vaccine sometimes looks like?
There are many MANY things that go along with what you are pointing out that Trump is destroying (before our very eyes) with (1) his response to COVID and (2) what he has been able to evoke from the GOP.
Setting aside that for a moment, it has occurred to me that Trump’s particular mental illness makes him capable of projecting the kind of certainty which mesmerizes weak minds…and those not so weak.
His bluster even strangles some of us at TPM.
Trump will behave the same way five days before removal ** or five months before.
** And Trump can have the plug pulled on him if what you know and I know comes even remotely close to happening
this crap is going to continue - with increasing intensity for the next 195 days … that is still more that half of a YEAR …
Trumps is recklessly rambling and scrambling and is convinced that there are no consequences - basically make a total hash out of the entire semester … but get a passing grade by cheating on the final exam & he’s home free…
Those who are fed up with Trump need to be playing a more aggressive game - and every time Trump craps on some population segment - make sure that it is amputated from the Trump political body - rescue it - pull it on board - attend to it - bring it around to the point of being committed to the Blue wave in November.
Remember how Trump said he could pull out a gun and shoot someone on 5th Avenue - and nobody would care … Well, HELL! … through deliberate inaction he effectively did it - and - it was your Grandmother / your Kid / you neighbor … your kid’s teacher … DO YOU CARE? People are caring … people are getting sick of the endless ugly attacks on people who are simply seeking to serve the public .
Why Russia? I mean, I understand that Russia will always attempt to capitalize on discord in America, but I think we have more than enough soulless rich assholes to fund this stuff ourselves.
I wouldn’t even call it Astroturf. More like all fertilizer with no weed barrier. Spread as much shit as far and as wide as possible, and see what grows up.
And, while I won’t go to these establishments, I will let them know I think they have put people at risk and I will not be customer in the future. I will also ask them if their insurance carrier is prepared to accept the liability for putting patrons at risk.
