The mentality that it takes for someone to take these kind of risks when there are already 100 different legal ways he could grift off his senate seat completely baffles me. THey don’t call the Senate the millionaire’s club for nothing. Like many burglars, maybe the thrill of breaking in is as important as what is actually stolen. Whatever his deal is, the dude has major, major problems. His fingers are as sticky as a Trump’s.
When he said that the indictment was a product of someone going after him because of his Hispanic heritage, I choked so hard I almost swallowed my tongue.
“while the initial indictment accused Menendez of doing favors which benefitted Cairo in exchange for cash and other perks, the new charge formally accuses the former chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of conspiring to secretly act on behalf of the Egyptian government.”
TPM was first to report that Menendez allegedly worked against April Corley
Thank you for today’s article, Josh K., and thank you also for the article you’ve linked (also authored by you). The TPM staff delivers again.
Hopefully the no-so-good senator will be resigning asap. At least the Democratic party has made it clear we have no tolerance for corruption in our ranks unlike the magafascist cult which seems to consider corruption in their ranks a virtue not a vice.
A SENATOR and a mere REPRESENTATIVE share office space? Breathe the same air? Why you goddamned commie, you. Next you’ll be telling us that all people really are equal! hahaha
Menendez is cooked - and is now on his way to being burnt to a crisp - - - this preliminary polling was before this latest superceding filing … so it ain’t gonna get better… Menendez can belligerently dig in his claws - and that will likely earn him a generally unsympathetic treatment at every turn.
I’ve voted for Menendez for Senate 3 times—and I’ve always disliked him. i really hope he doesn’t turn in to an albatross. Andy Kim has declared a primary challenge but he hasn’t yet proved himself. Phil Murphy is the only NJ politician I’ve liked in the last 50 years (except for my 2 most recent Congresspersons: Rush Holt and Bonnie Watson-Coleman)
It might be too late. It sounds like somebody on his team has flipped on him and the Justice Department has him dead to rights. He is going to have to throw a bigger fish under the bus to stay out of prison the rest of his life.
It might be … but a strategic rapid reboot & shrewd negotiating might let him see daylight sooner than later.
Doubt he has a truly big fish on his stringer to offer up.
However it does look like he is almost sliding off into a sort of “political suicide by cop” mode …
he is chattering like he is determined to die on this hill - and DOJ is like “Your call dude”
OK, once again it’s obvious that Menendez is totally corrupt, but then he’s from New Jersey We also have the happy warrior George Santos from New York. What more can I say except that I hope both get healthy prison sentences and serve them fully before being elected again.
No doubt the NJ portfolio of politicians has been sub-par in a lot of ways … but I’d add a few more names that were respectable.
Bill Bradley was a decent Senator
Mikie Sherrill is a class act
Tom Malinowski was a thoughtful & reasonable guy who worked hard - but mishandled his personal investment issue & could not overcome the Silver spoon advantage of Tom Kean Jr … who has been a grotesque disappointment.
Since Mike Sherrill has flat-out said she IS NOT going to run for the senate seat, it begins to look like it will be Kim with a wide margin - and possibly enough that if Murphy has an opening to fill - it would be most prudent to create an incumbent for the best chance of winning.
