Hardline Republicans, who are throwing a literal House floor temper tantrum over Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) deal with Democratic leadership, emerged from a meeting with the speaker Thursday confident he’d soon hand over his spine.
… The new speaker was always doomed by the same sword of Damocles that hung over McCarthy’s head: the one-person threshold for filing a motion to vacate the speakership, a concession McCarthy handed his detractors in order to secure the gig in the first place.
Adventures in minority rule.
It doesn’t seem to work out well for folks who’re willing to pass legislation or arrive at some kind of accommodation with the majority.
Not that it’s an experiment or something that might actually change minds.
Seems like the answer is for Johnson to put up a bill based on the existing agreement that covers BOTH spending deadlines. Pass it out of the House with the Dems and the few moderates. Then pack up his office and wait for the fireworks. In the meantime, the Senate passes the bill, Biden signs it and crisis for the nation is averted while Johnson faces the crisis of his own making. Easy Peasy…for someone sworn to upholding the Constitution and doing the best for the Country rather than best for whiners in his/her party.
Jamie Raskin: “I know you’d like to believe it, but your fantasies are not the law of the United States.”
Biggs: “I have great fantasies.”
Jamie Raskin: “I’m certain you do. You and Ms. Greene might want to discuss them together.”
“…hoping they can again use their party’s thin majority to force Johnson to debase himself in the same way that McCarthy did…”
Bishop of Bath and Wells: “Never, in all my years, have I encountered such cruel and foul-minded perversity! Have you ever considered a career as the Republican Speaker?”
All of us were Dan Goldman when Raskin said, “If that were a book she would censor it but she wants to advertise it through the House of Representatives” Well struck Mr Raskin. Well struck. #MarjorieTaylorPeen
What happens if Johnson lives up to his deal with Schumer, MTG (or similar) moves to declare the Speaker’s chair vacant, and the Democrats don’t go along with it?
Do we end up in a bizzarro world where all Rs must go along with MTG to vacate the chair?
And, if they don’t, does Johnson then realize it’s the Ds, not the RWNJs, who control his tenure?
It’s a fantasy… I can’t imagine the Rs going along with that for very long.
But it would sure put a spoke in the wheel at voting time.
Personally, as a small government conservative. I think Chuckie should tell Johnson that they had a deal. And it’s our way or the highway. Be specific that MTG and the other assholes can get fucked. If they want to shut it down, so be it. A government shut down will be a gift for Biden to show that in addition to the GOP being led by a proven loser and fraudster, the Asshole Caucus is basically s suicide squad. Time to take the gloves off boys and girls!
Why is it that all these GQP hard line, right-wing schmucks so adamantly refuse to do anything that benefits the American people or our country’s future? Are they Communists?
