In my day, you kept a dime in your shoe. So that you could make a phone call if you were ever stuck or needed a getaway.

So agree! I guess they put sex in the transactional category.

Our bank doesn’t offer an ATM only card. I wish they did.

Huzzah!
The good folks of the Hive need to realize many people live lives significantly arraigned differently than their own: especially around money and how it’s treated.
Not everyone is attached to the modern economy in the ways you are: you are free to regard their financial lives as primitive. If you’ve lived at the margin, experienced disaster, or abuse by the local Powers That Be (“Boy, I am The Law!”), you might hide a stash.
And you might have to accumulate that under the table.
Maybe if people were "rational about money "(as the current finance economic mindset claims) they would act like rational economic actors who live like some here assume.
But they aren’t: money and psychological issues, and dangerous financial moves and idiot assumptions bring down whole economies.
It was grim comedy when a shocked Alan Greenspan testified that to his amazement, the Efficient Market Hypothesis was in fact wrong: and markets could be irrational.
Adopt an anthropological attitude to people’s personal economics, and your moral understanding of it.
People live differently than you: it doesn’t mean they are bad people: and they might even be part of our voter base.
I’m dismayed too many Democrats don’t understand that there are our voters who never had state supplied IDs, and just what difficulties getting one presents, for example.

I’m listening to the horseshit wrap up.

When cleaning up my aunt’s house after she died, I found almost three thousand dollars in cash around the house in envelopes in drawers or among the tons of junk mail that she received. Seems like she went to the bank withdrew $200, spend maybe 40 dollars, placed the envelope somewhere got buried under the mail, couldn’t find it later, so she did another withdraw, and misplaced the envelope again…

Another thing that I discover is that there is a whole coin industry designed to rip off old people. Found some gold coins that she paid three times the current price. And then the collectors’ coins, she paid $700 Indian head penny which even now is worth $15.

I cannot remember the last time I took cash out of an ATM. The only cash in my wallet is some peso notes left over from my last trip to Mexico.
