WASHINGTON (AP) — The decision to wear a mask in public is becoming a political statement — a moment to pick sides in a brewing culture war over containing the coronavirus.

Wear a mask? You’re a sentient human being.
Don’t wear a mask? You’re a Republican.

Only in America.
And…
Inconclusive science and shifting federal guidance have no doubt muddied the political debate.
There is no fucking inconclusive science about this.

A mask is only a political statement in the US. It is, in fact, a responsible way of trying not to spread COVID-19…politics be damned.

This was not one of the best efforts on TPMs part.
Actually, it was shit piece from the get go.

Really? We need to frame it like this now?

And it’s only a political statement for wingers, and the press that wants to make it a ‘political statement.’

Is there anyway to get a mask with writing that says:
DUMP TRUMP
Make America Safe Again.

True, but TPM picked it up.

But last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began recommending wearing cloth masks in public to prevent transmitting the virus to others.
It’s not about “personal liberty” or “fighting the government.” It’s about preventing others from becoming infected and continuing the pandemic. Any other argument is pure bullshit.

Correction: Wearing a mask is not ‘political’ it’s only not wearing it that’s a political statement because that small loud band of deplorable right-wing white assholes made it so. No need to ‘both sides’ this. Only one group of people are throwing a fit over this and we as a nation (and press) need to stop giving these assholes attention.

I wonder if this “culture war” is brewing in hospital emergency rooms and surgeries? Are right wing doctors and nurses going to start refusing to wear masks?

“There’s such a strong culture of individualism that, even if it’s going to help protect them, people don’t want the government telling them what to do,” said Linsey Marr, a Virginia Tech engineering professor with experience in airborne transmission of viruses.
Individualism? I guess that’s he new way of saying ‘doesn’t give a shit about the welfare of others.’
Like in, Americans express their individualism by dumping heavy metals on their property and in water ways and by having their employees mine asbestos without proper protection.

Moreover, Trump, who is known to be especially cognizant of his appearance on television, has also told confidants that he fears he would look ridiculous in a mask and the image would appear in negative ads, according to one of the officials.
The “negative ads” are running now, as we speak, mask or no. The mask would only make a feeble attempt to make him appear - what’s that word? Caring.

There’s a real easy way. It’s called a “magic marker”.
You’re welcome.
“It’s a vanity thing, I guess, with him,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said of Trump on MSNBC. “You’d think, as the president of the United States, you would have the confidence to honor the guidance he’s giving the country.”

He’s weak and insecure. has been, since he was a kid, no different now.
A strong person just wears the damn mask.

I would think they’d let it go and get the “Make America Great Again” masks out. I’m surprised there aren’t more organized vanity masks out there – I’m waiting for Ford to introduce a “Mustang Bullitt” mask. It sends a message to the deplorables that, on top of everything else, we liberals know how to do redneck fun better than they do.

I took a Sharpie to my white gauze facemask and wrote the word “Re*Impeach”–so my mask is definitely political
