EXCLUSIVE: Why Washington State Is Desperate For Trump To Declare A COVID-19 Emergency | Talking Points Memo

It’s a Trump-22 situation.

Covid-19 is already in three nursing homes and two assisted living facilities in WA state. Our largest employers have already mandated working remotely where possible. Our largest University has closed, some public schools have closed, conferences and meetings canceled. As a community we are practicing social distancing. The region will take a major financial hit wrt cruises to Alaska. Many of those cruises begin in Seattle. We leaned last night that cruises maybe postponed. Trump hates us and our governor and our local leaders who are pedaling as fast as they can. He is supposed to be President of the United States not just his Maga hat wearing cult.

It’s not that hard. I’ve been at it for several decades.

That is the part of this I do not fully understand, the two you would think are related.

But what I do understand is Trump is transactional and therefore needs to find how he can make a buck before doing anything.

Don’t make me pull this thread over buster.

That’s true, but the federal government has resources that can be deployed that a crippled state would need from outside. Looks like Inslee is doing what he can with what he’s got.

Trump will not see another term as president once MAGA states start hurting from this pandemic.

ETA: And this means not just those infected but the ripple effects that this will have on transportation and commerce. The media will happily put the blame on him whether he deserves it or not. It’s on his watch.

Alas, our beloved sitting president cannot be investigated, indicted or tried for a criminal act. :rage:

But isn’t it a reasonable assumption that, since 19 of the deaths took place in a nursing home, the entire State is not rampant with the virus?

Of course, the nursing home should receive maximum focus - no problem there - but that is a mighty big State (compared to Connecticut with only eight counties).

Why are they desperate for the assist when it seems the focus is on one specific home?

ETA: @leftcoaster, you may’ve answered my question. Hadn’t realized it’d hit another few nursing homes.

I think in his dim little mind, the charade that all is normal or very minor is tied to the stock market/economy, and therefore his November success. He can’t understand that everyone knows he’s trying to bluff a virus.

According to the OLC Trump can’t act in a criminal manner. He can deliberately cause the death of people through negligence or by design and it’s legal.

WHAT THE FUCK! Shit’s gettin’ personal now.

We need to fry donnie with this.

What incredibly stupid shit.

ETA: Sorry, I’ve been cursing so much today. I am so mad and upset.

And if Trump was not such an imbecilic, ignorant, narcissistic bigot the state of Washington and the entire country would already be receiving the Federal aid that is needed.

If the Democrats are smart they will exploit his foot dragging to their advantage. He will look like a fool until he caves and declares the emergency. The nation will remember this; people are dying FFS. I hope the Dems start broadcasting today and thru the entire campaign period.

Not everyone, not yet, unfortunately. I was at a car dealership yesterday in Kitsap county, just west of Seattle. The salesman – guy who looked to be in his 60’s – kept licking his fingers to separate sheets of paper, before handing them over for my wife and I to sign. And of course the ritual hand shaking all around when we first got on the lot, and as we left.

The dealership did at least have bottles of pump hand sanitizer prominently displayed, which we made good use of. But sheesh! I know life has to go on, and we’re not quite at the stage of everyone wearing masks and rubber gloves. But some people really aren’t getting the message. Or else they just can’t break lifelong habits.

I assume if this outbreak were in the Eastern part of the state, he could be talked in to helping. But not the true blue West.

No doubt a helluva lot of whatever monies Trump manages to release for coronavirus relief will make its way to the pockets of the 1%-ers.

It is no longer just LifeCare in Kirkland. It has been diagnosed in at least two other nursing homes and two assisted living facilities. What the state and county want to do is move the less ill to other buildings. King County is purchasing a motel to house the less ill. Italy is already experiencing a shortage of beds. We do not want to get in that situation. No other nursing homes will take the folks from LifeCare even those who have negative tests. The same could happen all over the region.

Sadly Oregon is not being as aggressive as WA. The time to act is before things spin out of control.

You should have told him you wouldn’t make the purchase if he DIDN’T STOP LICKING HIS FINGERS.

Only for those states.
