EXCLUSIVE: New Delays In Final Stage Of Census Could Foil Trump’s Plan To Rig It | Talking Points Memo

The Census Bureau has identified issues in the data from the 2020 decennial census that will take an additional 20 days or so for it to fix, and thus delay the release of survey’s apportionment data until after President Trump leaves office, TPM has learned.

We need to redo the census in 2022 after the 'rona is tamed.

Wonderful. Maybe we’ll get something close to the truth.

“That would mean President-elect Joe Biden will be in the White House when the Census Bureau delivers to him the numbers for him to transmit to Congress…”

There was a terrible ghastly silence in the Trump White House residence.

There was a terrible ghastly noise in the Trump White House residence.

President-elect Joe Biden will be in the White House when the Census Bureau delivers to him the numbers for him to transmit to Congress for the purposes of determining how many House seats each state will get for the next decade.

So, based on modern Republican principles, President Biden can rig it so Kentucky gets only 1 seat. Also South Carolina…

It may not be constitutional, but Biden is all-powerful. What are ya gonna do?

It is also not clear whether the White House will try to get in the way of the Bureau being given the extra time that will ensure the quality of the count.

I’m gonna posit that this is not in any way unclear.

Congress can authorize as many interim censuses as it wants, but the decennial census is constitutionally mandated as the basis for reapportionment.

So you are saying we are going to see Trump go prostrate at the White House gates and defy the new administration to bulldoze on through? Points if he is in jammies, slippers and robe. However, Guiliani as Ford Prefect may not be quite on the nose for the role. And never take the man’s towel. You never know where it has been.

The phrase “fuck up a one-car funeral” comes to mind for some reason.

Meh…he’ll try to push it and sign something by the 19th anyway and the GOPers will all line up to ask “what difference was a week going to make anyway?”

In other words, once again their attempt at malfeasance is foiled by their incompetence.

In a perfect world the Census Bureau would use Toadglan’s time forecasting methods, the one that has him “announcing a much better plan than Obamacare very soon.”

They can say “We’ll have the census completed by Infrastructure Week, Mr. President.”

The thing is, the Census Bureau can just not deliver any numbers before January 20. What can Trump do with the Census numbers if he doesn’t have them yet?

Ah, finally. A delay and recount we can be somewhat happy about.

Nah, just extend this Census. Rehire people for the Nonresponse Followup (NRFU) operation that was cut short by Trump, and pick up in February or March from where they left off last month, finish it up in June, and have counts by fall 2021.

Drag your feet! Use every opportunity to delay delivering these Census counts! Keep making excuses for not delivering to Donald Trump! Help will be here soon, when Joe Biden is finally sworn in.
