Emboldened by Tuesday’s Election Night wins for Democratic candidates and causes across the nation, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Wednesday renewed their request for a meeting with President Donald Trump to discuss the ongoing shutdown — which is on its 36th day, now making it the…
Why???
Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake!
Let them fail.
The rightwing captured DC press is going full-bore trying to get Dems to cave right now. It’s the only pressure point they have left.
How does one negotiate with a party that operates exclusively in bad faith?
The better question is why Dems would go groveling to Republicans to beg them to stop making themselves unpopular with voters who need the government to work.
It’s nice to win again.
Spanberger, Sherrill and Newsom put together impressive coalitions that got back a lot of the voters that Dems lost: non college minorities. Dems also expanded gains among college educated white voters. Spanberger is the first Dem I know of in the modern era to win college ed whites by more than 15 pts. Sherrill won white women outright. Those are great signs. Newsom got his ballot initiative into positive territory in several purple counties. Very impressive
Mamdani’s win was appropriately balanced. He won a bare majority, which is a clear win because he was a better candidate and ran a more optimistic campaigns. Cuomo was washed. That said, Mamdani’s past dabbling in leftist and pro-Islamist worlds did see him lose 3 of 5 boroughs, jewish voters, catholic voters, white voters, non college voters, the very poor and very rich. He has a burden now to govern well and not let parochial interests dominate his term. I hope he governs well. Him doing well will be good for the party. Him screwing things up would be bad for the brand.
Payment up front and in full.
In this case, it means successfully extending the Obamacare subsidies before re-opening the government.
Going to need to see the goods on that, because from the data I see, Mamdami won 4 of 5 boroughs with three of them over 50%.
Last nights results should encourage Democratic leadership to tell the 3 or so Democratic Senators who’ve been voting with the GOP on the CR to fall back in line with rest of the party - as a signal to Republicans that Democrats view last night as a bellwether of increased Democratic electoral strength.
D. Leadership should also tell other Senators involved in rank and file talks to tell their GOP colleagues those talks are ending and it’s time for their leadership to come to the table - for their own party’s sake, if no one else’s.
This is smart on the part of Democrats. Cast themselves as extending an olive branch so it can be pushed away by Trump and Co. Trump’s smart move would be to accept the offer and start talks Lets see if the social media President can actually come to the table.
Along with adding legally enforceable language to block the GOP from rescinding the agreement later.
Oh it was Sliwa’s fault.
Sadly, no such language exists. Instead, you can threaten to filibuster any budget or CR again if the GOP goes back on the deal. With the thumping they just got on Tuesday, that should be enough for them to think twice before doing so.
True, but people will start to go hungry and face mounting or unaffordable health care costs and the Repubs can decide if they’re going to be on the right side of the sentiments of the majority of voters. It’s “good faith” v. “bad faith.”
There must be some way to write such a clause. That said, I suppose you’re right to the extent that even if it were written and enacted, SCOTUS would either declare it unconstitutional or ignore it.

Maybe. I have to admit, though, it’s now hard to imagine the GOP ever acting in good faith, or losing enough arrogance to think they couldn’t get away with screwing over everyone else.
Plus no one here should be counting losing Staten Island against Mamdani. The Democratic nominee for mayor never wins Staten Island.
My goodness, he won over 1 million votes!
The Democrats should suggest the following to Donald Trump: from now on we will call the ACA Trump Care, we pinky promise.
Shut down over.
One hopes any discussion will focus on advantaging all of the people vs maintaining the status of elites, regardless of party.
Unsurprised that ‘blame the weirdo with too many cats’ is the default response for some GOP New Yorkers.
Republicans are fooling themselves if they really think that. Mamdami won more than 50% of the vote in a three-way race.
Even if Cuomo got every Sliwa, other independent, and write-in vote, he still would have lost.
