Emboldened by Election Night Wins, Dem Leadership Asks Trump for Another Sit-Down to Discuss Shutdown

“to demand”, I like that - looks like the wussies have been emboldened by their colleagues’ victories. Now, hold fast, get health care restored and show the world what “TACO” means…

Every time I read a John Judis piece here, I tell myself “Do not read any more John Judis pieces.” And then I go and do it again. Today he’s knocking Mamdani for mentioning Eugene Debs and failing to thank Hakeem Jeffries in his victory speech. Jfc. :man_facepalming:

Counting on Schumer and Jeffries not to give in seems somewhat foolish. They are both more concerned with maintaining power than doing anything for the working class.

Hmmm, interesting. Doesn’t Queens have the highest immmigrant population of all the 5 Burroughs.

Looks like Staten Island continues to be hard core working class racist. Is that where Silwaa received the most votes?

Oops, ETA…yep. He did. I see the legend now.

Staten Island is a reliably redneck county. Ask Pete Davidson about him. He did a movie entitled king of Staten Island. Autobiographical. Well OK, the movie really doesn’t help, but take my word for it.

I don’t quite agree with that assessment, but, If they’re both more concerned with maintaining power than anything else, then last night’s results should tell them that fighting Trump is the best way to do that.

That said, I agree that Schumer might fold, not because he wants to maintain power, but because of his seemingly unshakeable belief that Senate comity must be preserved even in a time of unrelenting, bad faith, fascistic power grabs and violent rhetoric from the right.

Indeed. My reference is the film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days when McConaughhey takes home Hudson to his Staten Island home & they play BS on the deck. I was like MS up north!

Nope. It’s reliably cop country. And mobbed up to fuck. And neither of those are progressive at all. Both have their power base, and both power bases are threatened by government taking steps to make things better for people.

A fair chunk of the Queens vote for Cuomo was the Hasidic community, with another big chunk coming from what’s essentially ‘Suburbia-lite’: eastern Queens, where the bleed-through to Nassau County is heaviest, and the demographics are a bit more affluent, and more conservative.

Schumer’ll fold because of his inerring political instincts for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

So basically the republican/media position is “Pay the ransom, and then we’ll talk about whether we’re going to kill your hostages anyway”?

Yes. And a trio of Democrats who are retiring, and so do not have to answer to the voters, are negotiating with them.

Yup. When you’re winning on all points, it’s obviously time to go back to business as usual…:man_facepalming:

So Republicans get 56 votes instead of 53 to end the shutdown? It’s a discussion that’s going nowhere after last night.

I enjoyed that movie, but it wasn’t really a takedown of Staten Island. If you want to see Pete Davidson doing that, this SNL weekend update clip is much better:

Make them pay in advance. Extension of the health care tax credits before the government reopens

Whenever there is a Judis piece here, I again realize that TPM is not the paradise of journalism that it hypes itself as during fund drives and I look to other sources for a few days.

Depends entirely on if Schumer and 2 others decide ‘comity’ is on the table.

Judis has to be the most neo-conservative self-described ‘Democratic Socialist’ I’ve ever heard of.

And this?

Angry? He clearly wasn’t watching the same speech I was.

What, by saying he didn’t want to have to talk about Cuomo anymore? That’s not nasty, it’s dismissive, which is far kinder and far more hurtful to Cuomo, who is all about attention.

That’s it. That’s all he said about Cuomo (though he did quote Mario.), so… really, John, how about we knock off the performative fretting and civility-signalling. Scolding someone who just won for not sucking up to the people whose asses he kicked just makes it clear you were never on the same side as the rest of us.

Republicans are white guys, so they can be as rude and angry as they want. People of color, on the other hand, should Know Their Place and not get uppity. Anything but obsequious politeness is Angry Black Man.
