Election Results Could Take Weeks—Just Look At How Long Some Primary Counts Dragged On | Talking Points Memo

Having survived a crushing primary season where election infrastructure quickly had to be adapted for large-scale absentee voting, there’s one thing election officials are hoping for in the general election: that it’s not their jurisdiction that’s preventing the country from finding out who won the White House.

“Recent efforts by President Trump to question the legitimacy of an election that takes more than a day to call only further illustrates the pressure election officials are under.” … Dear President Dumbfuck, how long do you figure it took to call an election before electricity? I don’t recall reading about disputed results back then.

Final results will take a while. But it’ll be enough of a blowout that we’ll know Biden is coming in on election night.

True, but it’ll be well worth the wait, and give Donnie less time to steal things from the White House.

Yeah and these stories are annoying.

[“It’s a very solvable problem, which makes it frustrating to still be talking about it.”].

Of course it is.

But Barr, Trump, McConnell would be very much at a disadvantage if it really were.

When one’s very existence as a free man hangs in the balance, requiring chaos for a successful outcome, what should be easy becomes impossible.

This time next month (when the COVID death total nears WWII combat deaths), the re-election of the man responsible will be seen to be a criminal enterprise.

That’s the PLAN; Make the election such a Shit-Show that the Trumpists can call the entire process into question in the public’s (short attention-span) minds.

Elections are run state by state and then locality by locality.

States must provide extra personnel to count the ballots that are mailed in to each location: divide up the labor of opening the envelopes, checking signatures and feeding them into the machine that records the vote.

NY state is still counting their primary ballots because although they claim to have hired extra personnel for the count they didn’t really do so.

I’m okay with them. I want us going into this election with a lot of trepidation in the electorate.

Will drive turnout massively.

If the story is “meh, Biden’s got this”, that’s when we could lose due to people not making the effort.

I agree. Even if it were two candidates like Ike and Adlai, the same logistics would apply:

What are the best ways to vote by mail? The variable is Trump, The Criminal.

Oh…and there is a synthesis of both of your points:

Gloom article? Fine…just provide an aggressive path forward. Some Gloom articles do not do that. My Dad was a combat Company Commander and there is a difference.

I’ll add that mail in provides a paper trail, so large parts of the outcome can be audited.
Strange that, no?

The Trump campaign has placed a Fox News-only buy in DC cable zones. 8/3-8/16 flight, $38K total

That wouldn’t happen anyway this time. Everyone who is not voting for Trump is voting against him and is desperate to get that vote registered soonest. Turnout has been ridiculous for the primaries.

Not gonna happen. The result will be clear by 10:00 p.m. Eastern on November 3rd

And yet he’s well ahead.

George Will is with you. He said that on Lawrence’s show a couple of weeks ago. Will is not a Pollyanna type.

Agree 100%, no indication of complacency. And folks making it to the primaries are certainly going to be at the actual election.

Just also don’t mind keeping people on their toes for a little while longer so that we can be certain that the drain gets unclogged and we can flush.
