El Paso Mayor Says Trump Will Visit The City On Wednesday

This was the chorus of a happy party song (which was also a radical revolutionary anarchic song) when I was about twenty.

No. Bernie has to stay behind in case Moscow Mitch calls the Senate into session (ha-ha) so that Bernie can vote against any real gun control.

Thank you, Tom Perez, for making us relive this nightmare, although it seems it won’t be as bad as last time as far as Bernie (not a Democrat!) is concerned. But I have many other complaints about how this is being handled.

I hope he tells Trump “Go fuck yourself.” and then flips the bird while walking away.

Complaints Department is down the hall.
We seem to have a few threads established for that already.

“He’s coming out here on Wednesday,” Margo said during a press conference. “And I want to clarify for the political spin that this is the office of the mayor of El Paso in an official capacity welcoming the office of the President of the United States, which I consider is my formal duty.”

What the Mayor was thinking as he spoke these words: “But, as a sentient and caring human being, I don’t want that son of a bitch anywhere near my city.”

Why do I think there will be a number of Texans visiting Mexico on Wednesday?

Yes, now let’s count how many LEOs will gleefully smile and pose with this smegma collection on legs to make everything even more depressing.

…this is the office of the mayor of El Paso in an official capacity welcoming the office of the President of the United States, which I consider is my formal duty.

And this is why evil wins: because good is dumb.

Let him come, but walk his ass directly to the crime scene, recount for him in great detail how it all went down, then take him outside for a town hall meeting to debate against Beto O’Rourke on gun control.

I hope someone organizes a counter-demonstration to Trump’s visit, and that visit attracts more people than Trump’s rally… I mean condolence visit.

Yup, he is a coward. I hope the community understands that for Trump this is a photo-op and that’s it.

If I were the mayor, I’d hate to dump this on someone else, but I’d have the vice-vice-(maybe one more vice) mayor ‘host’ the pResident, have them notify him that unfortunately the mayor was tied up with more important business of visiting victims in the hospital, and that unfortunately the decision was made for security reasons that any kind of public venue for a statement would not be possible at this time. The pResident would be welcomed to be briefed by local law enforcement in private and, for his safety, that is all.

Sounds like Margo’s caught between a rock and a hard place. Margo’s wife and Laura
Bush are close friends. The governor is a Repug. Margo is on the record opposing the wall and, IIRC, Trump belittled him for it, but not too much, because Margo is a Repug. The town is overwhelmingly Democratic. The meetings will; be tense, at best. Blotus will be decidedly unwelcome, even if the rest of the politicos try to put their best foot forward.

What I’m hoping is that the “Do Something!” chant catches on. I hope that between now and Nov. 2020, crowds everywhere just automatically break into that chant everytime a GOP politician starts to yap about thoughts and prayers and mental health. I hope crowds of people show up to see Blotus and Abbott, et al. and start yelling Do somwthing!

The late Molly Ivins exhorted her readers to take to the streets with their pots and pans and beat them loudly in response to Bush’s run up to the Iraq war. I wish we were the type of country that did that when we protested. But Do Something! is perfect. It hits the mark, uniquely fits this moment, and works perfectly for our collective dissatisfaction with Congress and Moscow Mitch.

Correct on both counts. Just like arsonists that can’t resist being at the scene of a fire they set.

Given the Fox/NYTimes/WH theme is “let’s put aside division and be united.” The Trump/Fox Axis of Disinformation is looking for footage to gin up the faux outrage machine. He’ll say some variation of “Look, I went down there to heal and unite this country and those people said mean things to me. There is no pleasing those people. Those people are the ones dividing the country, not me.”

People should still protest and should still speak their truths.

When Trump gave his American Carnage Inauguration speech, he tried to sell the country that it was a description of what we were at the time; turns out it was a prophesy, a prediction of how much worse things were going to get. American Carnage is what Trump wants and American Carnage is what Trump does.

How is his advance campaign staff going to make sure he has only a supportive crowd for the TV? Free speech zones? Have a mini rally somewhere safe? Bring in supporters?

Beto is getting some mojo back.

Set up a mic at the airport in the shadow of AF1’s wing. Perimeter around the airport extended far enough so discouraging words won’t reach President Snowflake. Smallest municipal delegation possible - the Mayor probably has to show up; the Police Chief can be too busy to show. The Governor and Senators probably have to go - let them wallow in ETTD stank. Wheels up, next stop Toledo.

Most likely I suppose. Maybe bring in the border patrol and national guard. He can blow up today’s Failing NYT’s front page as a backdrop:

Welp, you can assume with no further evidence that the mayor of a large city is dumb or you can look at what he’s actually saying, where he makes it clear that this welcoming gesture is something he regards as a requirement of the protocols of the office and not a thing he’s personally happy to do. “Office” of the mayor, not him personally. “Official capacity,” not him personally. “Office” of the president, not the individual. “My formal duty,” not a thing he personally wants to do. In fact this is an astonishing repudiation of Trump the person and something I can’t remember seeing between a mayor and a president on a visit like this in my lifetime. He’s going out of his way to signal his lack of enthusiasm for this. Even the Jan Brewer-Obama thing is reduced to a personal squabble that probably happens dozens of times in any administration compared to this unmistakable rebuke. He’s greeting the occupant of the office because it’s his unpleasant duty that he’ll perform because he’s an adult and that’s what adults do, but he wants his constituents to make no mistake about it.

Or he’s dumb, sure, whatever. I don’t know the guy.

Perhaps the tRump campaign can add ‘Trump’ styptic pencils to the 2020 campaign store.
