Donald Trump’s Long Overdue Reckoning Is Finally At Hand

State prosecutions of election interference in Michigan, Georgia and possibly a couple of other swing states run parallel to and reinforce whatever J6 charges the SC will bring. The impact on 2024 up and down the ballot have not been fully factored into the discussion. And it weighs in the same direction as popular anger over Dobbs fallout and other Republican culture war overreach.

Oh good morning to you,
I hate to inform you
That we’re all in a stew! :musical_note:

He said the record heatwaves that have roiled the US, Europe, China and elsewhere in recent weeks have heightened “a sense of disappointment that we scientists did not communicate more clearly and that we did not elect leaders capable of a more intelligent response”.

“It means we are damned fools,” Hansen said of humanity’s ponderous response to the climate crisis. “We have to taste it to believe it.”

This year looks likely to be the hottest ever recorded globally, with the summer already seeing the hottest June and, possibly, hottest week ever reliably measured. Conversely, 2023 may in time be considered an average or even mild year, as temperatures continue to climb. “Things will get worse before they get better,” Hansen said.

While global temperatures are undoubtably climbing due to the burning of fossil fuels, scientists are divided over whether this rate is accelerating. “We see no evidence of what Jim is claiming,” said Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist who added that the heating of the climate system had been “remarkably steady”. Others said the idea was plausible, although more data was required to be certain.

“It’s maybe premature to say the warming is accelerating, but it’s not decreasing, for sure. We still have our foot on the gas,” said Matthew Huber, an expert in paleoclimatology at Purdue University.

My gut, informed by my experience as a retired plant ecologist, tells me the that Hansen is probably correct. Your view and experience may differ, but the warming is not decreasing at any rate.

I am going to assume those 16 bozos had a much worse day yesterday than DFG. They probably thought their scheme was no big deal - signed some forms, did a bit of cosplay, it’s all over and forgotten by now - then the hammer drops with multiple felony charges. They are very seriously screwed.

Depends how you count, but I would love to see a jury hold Fat Donnie liable for getting Ashli Babbitt’s dumb terrorist ass killed. The statute just speaks of resulting death, it doesn’t require the defendant to have done the killing.

Never.

WaPo: Tuberville Has Stiffed Vets On Donation Vow

The Washington Post reports:

“I stand with our veterans and I’m going to donate every dime I make when I’m in Washington, D.C., to the veterans of the state of Alabama. Folks, they deserve it. They deserve it a lot more than most of us.” — Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), in a Facebook campaign video, March 9, 2020.

Yet there is no evidence that Tuberville has kept a key pledge he made when he ran for Senate three years ago — that he would “donate very dime” he made in Washington to Alabama veterans.

A U.S. senator earns $174,000 a year. We’re assuming that Tuberville was proposing to donate only his salary, not the substantial earnings he makes from his investments. (He has an estimated net worth of $20 million.) With Tuberville now having served 2½ years as senator, that would amount to a total of $437,000 in potential donations.

The Freep names all of the fake electors:

  • Meshawn Maddock: Republicans chose Maddock to serve as Michigan GOP co-chair after the 2020 election.
  • Kathy Berden: In 2015, the state committee of the Michigan GOP elected Berden as the party’s national committeewoman. The fake certificate of electors lists Berden as “Chairperson, Electoral College of Michigan.”
  • Mayra Rodriguez: Rodriguez is a Michigan lawyer facing a complaint from the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission filed with the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board recommending disciplinary action against her. The fake certificate of electors lists Rodriguez as “Secretary.”
  • Timothy King: King was the lead plaintiff in a legal effort led by Trump ally Sidney Powell to overturn the 2020 election in Michigan.
  • John Haggard: Haggard served as a Republican elector in 2016. He was one of the plaintiffs who brought a lawsuit in the wake of the 2020 election to try to name Trump the winner.
  • Stanley Grot: Grot serves as Macomb County’s Shelby Township clerk.
  • William “Hank” Choate: Choate previously served as the chair of the Jackson County Republican Party and chair of the Michigan GOP’s 7th District.
  • Amy Facchinello: Facchinello was elected to serve as a board member of Grand Blanc Community Schools in 2020.
  • Clifford Frost: Frost previously ran for office and served on the Michigan GOP state committee.
  • Mari-Ann Henry: A previous webpage for the Greater Oakland Republican Club showed Henry was involved with the group.
  • Michele Lundgren: Lundgren ran as a Republican in 2022 seeking to represent part of Detroit in the Michigan House of Representatives. She lost her election to incumbent state Rep. Abraham Aiyash, D-Hamtramck.
  • James Renner: Renner was one of two names that appear on the fake certificate of electors who was not originally nominated by the state’s Republican Party to serve as an elector in the event of a Trump victory.
  • Ken Thompson: Thompson is the second individual whose name appears on the fake certificate of electors who was not originally nominated by the state’s Republican Party to serve as an elector in the event of a Trump victory.
  • Rose Rook: Rook has held various local leadership positions with the Republican Party.
  • Marian Sheridan: Sheridan currently serves as the Michigan GOP’s grassroots vice-chair. She was also a plaintiff in the federal election lawsuit to try to award Michigan’s Electoral College votes to Trump.
  • Kent Vanderwood: Vanderwood currently serves as mayor of the city of Wyoming.

Two others refused to participate:

Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and Gerald Wall were nominated by the state’s Republican Party in 2020 to serve as presidential electors if Trump won, but their names do not appear on the fake certificate.

From what I’ve read, the target letter did NOT include possible offenses for inciting the insurrection. Talking heads, including Lawrence Tribe, suggested that Jack Smith couldn’t be bothered with attempting to try Trump for anything like that due to the complications involved, so he’ll likely go with a trimmed down indictment on charges he knows will stick.

There’s no “reckoning”, however, unless Trump is indicted for the most serious possible charges. If Trump isn’t charged with inciting the insurrection under 18 USC 2383, as the House committee recommended, Trump will use that as a PR victory that, in fact, there was no insurrection and he is totally innocent, and the House committee was just a political witch hunt.

This is a pattern with DoJ under Garland. Always in a defensive crouch to avoid possible failure in court even when the act of charging and attempting to prove serious charges against powerful people is critical to the rule of law. Trump would never be acquitted by a DC jury of insurrection; at worst it would be a hung jury (probably only one or two holdouts at most) and Trump could be tried again and again if necessary. That’s the reckoning: the public gets to see just how ugly Trump’s actions were.

Further, only 18 USC 2383 carries with it a disqualification from holding office. That’s what we need with Trump to finally sideline him from public life and the damages he causes every day. Jack Smith and the prosecutors must also defend our rights to seek justice against this menace, even if it isn’t a sure thing that might impact their conviction stats.

I’m very curious to see how many of them cling to the Big Lie. These aren’t ultra-privileged, born-into-enormous-wealth, above-the-law rich kids. These are mostly normal (incredibly gullible and/or cynical) folks that are staring down the very real possibility of leaving their families and homes for a considerable stint in prison. If one or more flips, I wonder what stories they might tell about the cast of Trumpian characters that convinced them that this was the right course.
