The Department of Justice switched up the team of lawyers representing the Trump administration in it push to get a citizenship question on the 2020 census, according to the Washington Post.
Saw somewhere else that the reason for this may be that it’s easier to give bullshit answers when it’s not the same lawyers contradicting something that they’ve already told the judge.
Pardon my cynicism but I can’t help thinking that the previous lawyers felt they could not go in front of the judge and start arguing something that is completely at odds with their previous positions - and to further risk their client undercutting them on Twitter. Self respect has to kick in at some point.
The evidence regarding the motives behind the question is pretty clear and discovery is only going to reveal that further. Changing lawyers is not going to get trump a complete do over.
We need better shysters .
There is no room for Attorneys that inadvertently tell the truth .
“Trump? Tweets? we don’t know what the fuck he is talking about”
“Since these cases began, the lawyers representing the United States in these cases have given countless hours to defending the Commerce Department and have consistently demonstrated the highest professionalism, integrity and skill inside and outside the courtroom. The attorney general appreciates that service, thanks them for their work on these important matters and is confident that the new team will carry on in the same exemplary fashion as the cases progress.”
Time for some resume polishing, and a few phone calls to old law school friends.
On Friday, the Justice Department asked for more time to determine a “new” reason to include the question.
Except, it’s Rump, himself, who has said that the question is about redistricting. Specifically, in public. For the purposes of determining where the real Americans are. So, I’m not too clear on what their new reason will involve.
Am I being too cynical if I’ve considered the possibility that Department of (In)Justice lawyers are in communication with Roberts to find out what ‘justification’ for the citizenship question will pass muster?
Wish I had more confidence in our fascistgop led government institutions.
If you are this far into litigation and you have to come up with a new reason to argue something you want to do is constitutional and your previous reasons have been shown to be for a partisan unconstitutional motivation it is really hard to imagine how you are going to win going forward.
As will be reflected in filings tomorrow in the census-related cases, the Department of Justice is shifting these matters to a new team of Civil Division lawyers going forward
AND how many members of this ‘new team’ are going to be tRump appointees?
First of all: how many do-overs do these lying motherfuckers get?
Second:
WILL YOU PLEASE STOP WITH THE PICTURES OF THAT DISGUSTING, ANTI-AMERICAN MOTHERFUCKER ON EVERY STORY WHERE THE LETTERS “T” “R” “U” “M” and “P” APPEAR? You guys are turning into Fox Junior. We KNOW what that twisted, lying motherfucker looks like, you don’t have to keep showing us his disgusting face every time there’s a story that somehow related (tenuously) to something he’s done in the last three years
UIt’s quite simple: out with the career lawyers who believe in adhering to professional conduct, including not arguing nonsense to a court, and in with ideologues willing to tie themselves into knots and the law be damned.
We’re talking about a constitutional provision that clearly mandates the counting of all, regardless of citizenship. And an attempt to add a citizenship question, the rationale for which has been demonstrably racist and preferential. If any court, including the Supremes, gives credence to any after-the-fact manufactured rationale when the evidence remains that the real reason was racism and promoting the interests of one political party over another from inception, then kiss the rule of law goodbye and wave a hanky as democracy leaves the floor. In retrospect, Robert’s invitation to come up with a rationale was extremely dangerous.
