The career lawyers can’t fire their client so there’s only one way out.
I would be very surprised if the lead career lawyer didn’t update his CV and make a few calls to friends in private firms immediately after that debacle of a hearing last week. Donnie and Barr put him in an untenable position in an already untenable case.

When you look back at the comments of the DOJ lawyers last week, it is clear they knew they never had a legal framework to make the case. They were likely happy to walk away and be done with the case. Trump’s tweet killed that idea, and it appears that over the holiday weekend, these lawyers, who appear to want to continue their careers (somewhere) have made it clear to Barr that this case is a lost cause.
And now, Trump has clearly and publicly announced the case is truly about suppressing votes.
I’m not a lawyer, but I can’t imagine the judge rejecting any of the previous arguments when considering new ones. Plus, the plaintiffs will have grounds to delay the hearings to prepare new arguments. This may drag this on for a long time, all while the printing presses continue.
If the Dems are smart, they will use this to clearly show the R’s can’t win unless they cheat, and every person needs to know that the R’s are doing everything to suppress votes, now and in the future.
This is their most ‘in your face’ effort to override ‘one person, one vote’ and maintain the power of elites.

Not Jackson but… He gave them until then to clarify whether the defendant (Trump administration) was going to drop the question as they told him the day before or was going to pursue trying to include the question as Donnie said in his tweet. On Friday they told him the government is going to pursue including the question but needed more time to figure out a new false reason for it.

I am going to guess they are 'Junior ‘G’ Men (or women)", who are assigned to this to make it appear the DOJ is on the case. I don’t want to give Barr any credit, but one does have to think he knows this is a losing battle, so as long as his office continues to ‘work’ on the case, then Fat Donny thinks something is happening.
I do not think Barr is changing his stripes, but I do think he, like John Roberts, may be considering what history will say about them. Or, maybe I’m just thinking there is some good left in the world.
(I think it might be my counter reaction to watching the dark season three of 'Stranger Things".)
