Distance From White House To Capitol Proves Trump Didn’t Incite Riot! Lawyers Plead | Talking Points Memo

Fair enough, but if I don’t like something I skip it. And if I really don’t like something I message TPM on their tip/contact line to let them know about my problem. IMHO that’s the way to get something done. Complaining to each other? Doubt it has any effect.

It gets better—that is to say, worse:

I can’t stress enough how profoundly moronic is the “Gateway Pundit,” real name Jim Hoft, aka “The Stupidest Man on the Internet.” Among his longstanding idiocies is a constant linking to baseless rumors and parody stuff as if it were hard news. He simply never asks himself, “Is this true?” He’s like a child playing in traffic.

But the obvious question is: why was the mob there in the first place? Will Trump’s “counsel” argue that the crowd consisted of thousands of people obsessively interested in the Constitution’s electoral provisions and who were fully aware that the electoral college confirmation would be taking place on Jan 6? Would any of us have been even dimly aware of this arcane event if Trump hadn’t consistently tweeted that the time to strike was on the 6th, and they had their last opportunity to stop Pence from confirming the vote? I mean, they didn’t pick Jan 6 by throwing darts at a calendar.

Actually Google Maps has it at 1.6 miles and 34 minutes by the shortest route down Pennsylvanian Avenue. In August it’s about ten miles and an hour and a half.

Don’t forget that his first public comment after the insurrection had started was favorable toward the rioters/insurrectionists. He professed his love for them. I don’t see how his lawyers spin that.

Later in their brief, Trump’s lawyers pointed out that Ellipse Park, where Trump gave his speech, is around a half-hour walk away from the White House.

Presumably you meant to write “a half-hour walk away from the Capitol”?

I’m with you on “pre-planning,” it’s sounds kind of ridiculous, but I would contend that “proactive” serves a different purpose than “active.” Active means that you are doing something, but doesn’t really show any kind of purpose. Proactive implies a level of intention behind an action. A honeybee collecting nectar is active, but not proactive. It’s not thinking about why it’s collecting the nectar or where it will go next. Bringing extra masks to hand-out to people who need them at a BLM protest is being proactive. It’s taking action with some–pre-planning–to boot.

OT - but did anyone else see this Super Bowl commercial?

And as he already knew when he said it he was bullshitting as usual. Obviously it would not have been a good look, besides being farther than he has ever walked in his whole life.

Yeah, but look at the caption of the brief — where it’s entitled “in re: impeachment of former president…”

I started reading it — mostly to scan for typos and misspellings— but stopped at the table of contents where it referred to “Democrat members” of the House. Very predictable.

I hear that there is an impeachment trial happening.

Before the rally on the Ellipse, Trump had spent two months (really, five years) in creating the myth that if he lost it meant that the election had been stolen.

So getting his folks to DC to “Stop the Steal” was all that was needed to get the critical mass together, and the rally was just the point of ignition.

Also, the key is why Trump didn’t immediately call out the troops when he saw the mob on television.

Let alone the small-group gathering to pre-plan the pre-planning meeting.

The problem during the campaign was that trump articles were predominant and often the only ones with any prominence on the front page. Post-election they’ve also tended to crowd out anything else.

Josh is even hosting a series of posts where we are encouraged to reveal our post-trump catharses.

Sometimes enough is enough.

I saw it. I LOL’d. Ad for a PR/marketing firm, right?

Another positive of Covid. No more obligatory office “parties”.

In a section claiming that the impeachment trial itself was unconstitutional (a point refuted by even prominent conservative lawyers) Trump’s lawyers added a veiled threat of the precedent Trump’s trial would set.

“[A] future House could impeach former Vice President Biden for his obstruction of justice in setting up the Russia hoax circa 2016,” they wrote.

“While he could not be removed from the Vice Presidency because his term ended in 2017, he could be barred from holding future office. The same flawed logic the House Managers advance could apply to former Secretary of State Clinton for her violations of 18 U.S.C § 793.”
