Discussion for article #246360
The calculation here is that their stonewalling will energize their base more than it energizes ours. But given that their entire electoral strategy depends, literally depends, on a few points of black turnout fall-off in addition to mobilizing the semi-mythical “Missing Whites,” we’ll get to see how that works, I guess.
All I see is a TV spot with Trump’s “Turn out the lights” chant as a soundtrack over pictures of lights winking out on the Statue of Liberty, libraries, space probes, courthouses, embassies, farms, assembly lines and cities then transitioning into B&W footage of 20th century fascism…
Won’t revenge be sweet should the Dems take back control of the Senate and Hillary or Bernie are the ones making the nominations from the White House? Advice and consent from the Rs would no longer be necessary.
If he could line up the volunteers for inevitable defeat, Obama should nominate a new potential justice every few weeks, to keep the issue alive and top-most in voters’ thoughts.
Give 'em hell, Harry! Some iteration of this needs to be said three times a day by every Dem who finds him or herself in front of a camera.
“Unfortunately, the Republican leader is listening to Donald Trump and the junior senator from Texas. He’s not listening to mainstream America,” Reid continued. (Senator Harry Reid-NV)
LOL! What a way to rattle Cruz’s cage – mention the loudest meanie but only reference Cruz by inference.
We’re now living in a perpetual election cycle where nothing can be decided until after “the American people have spoken” in November.
And this should serve as notice as to how the world will operate with a GOP president and Senate in control of the country.
Constitution be damned, we’re gonna do what we want and just try and stop us.
Masterful. Tying the entire Senate Republicans to Trump/Cruz is just great. We know some ® Senators up for reelection in swing states who ain’t exceedingly thrilled to fight this SCOTUS battle to start with. They won’t be exceedingly exuberant to do so under the Trump/Cruz battle…
And all as they’re saying they’re defending the Constitution, the inerrant scripture of the divine founding fathers™. Rubes also genuflects to this.
The nominee is going to land smack into McConnell’s lap —
Then he’s really gonna squirm — more popcorn !
Harry Reid is a past master at trolling Mitch McConnell and the rest of the Senate GOP miscreants.
The silver lining here is that the public/press won’t be able to ignore what the Republicans in the Senate have done to Obama for seven long years now that its a Supreme Court Justice they’re obstructing. And it’ll happen during an election year.
Reid is being too damn nice. Start calling things the way they are - in this case their obstruction means they don’t give a shit about the country. Just as their response on Guantanamo.
Nay Harry this move proves how scared shitless these guys are of the likes of the heritage foundation and freedom caucus.
HIt him with the chair Harry.
Here’s the ad you run - “The GOP is trying to prevent a black president from putting a nominee on the court because THEY want to put their own reactionary, right wing justice on the court to dismantle voting rights and disenfranchise minority voters.”
Rinse, repeat. This is a loser for the GOP. That’s why they’re doubling down now.
It could come sooner with the potential for 4-4 vote splits in the Court. In such cases the issue at hand gets sent back to the lower court from whence it came and the decision at THAT level is upheld.
As I read it, the number of these cases and the issues involved are such that more of them will result in a liberal victory than a conservative one. And who knows what may be coming up the pipeline.
What may be equally interesting is that time period between Nov. 6th and inauguration day, especially if the election results include a Democratic victory for President and regaining a Senate majority. Does the GOP then frantically try to see if they can get Dems to present a Justice nominee in their interim period in hopes of having some influence on the outcome by using their last days of majority to try and lever through as centrist/conservative nominee as possible?
And do the Democrats tell them, “You insisted we had to have this delay until a new President. Wait until election day and we will start making some rational decisions.”?
Again…I think this is going to be one of the most consequential elections this nation has ever held just because of the control of the Supreme Court and its long term impact on where we go as a nation and as global citizens…particularly in terms of trying to deal with climate change. With so many potential vacancies, whoever wins in November will set the future course of the Court for years to come. If it is the GOP, any hopes of the US and through it, the world, dealing with climate change is going to be the victim…and so will our planet.
This isn’t strong enough, Harry. Play the race card because this is EXACTLY RACISM! Plain and simple.
