Discussion: 'Year Of The Republican Establishment' Narrative Loses Credibility

Discussion for article #223491

I love Ed Kilgore’s writing. But does anyone honestly think a dem senate pickup is possible in Miss.?

I’ve been saying for a long time…talk of Democrats demise in 2014 is nothing but ITB babble. Republicans have moved so far to the right that most Americans look at these guys in disgust. Thats what happens when the fringe rules. When the Birchers are your party mainstream…you’ve lost touch in the right wing base’s little bubble.

Not just possible…likely. You have to realize that the Democrat running would have been considered a moderate to conservative republican 10 years ago.

In MS, I’d argue it’s dependent upon ground game and turnout. If WH/DSCC decide it’s in play, and go hard at McDaniel, I think they could flip it. If they go anything less than all in, MS stays R.

Some call the Tea Party an Astroturf movement. Artificial grassroots. I prefer to think of them as too much fertilizer and not enough weed barrier. Either way, does anyone need more proof after these results?

One of the best facilitators of one of the biggest taker states Mississippi is primaried into a difficult runoff election. The less flagrant taker state Iowa’s nominee is running against the Farm Bill!

I guess I have to ask what credibility the GOP had to lose.

I would say its possible and has moved up the hill of probability quite a bit now. I wouldn’t start coloring MS in blue just yet, but the door is definitely going to be open.

And quite frankly, even having a shot in MS is something to smile about. It is going to force republicans to spend money where they don’t have it budgeted. And even a close race there is going to be a big splash of cold water on the “inevitable republican 2014 victory” meme that continues to float around.

The question that should be asked anytime any talking head starts up with that meme is…Show me a net six seats where republicans are ahead in the polls(there aren’t six races).

More to Scott’s point, if whatever is left of the “moderate Republicans” in MS decide McD. is just too far out for them (even by their standards), they may very well stay home giving Childers an edge he just wouldn’t have had before. There may be some not so certifiable MS Repubs who realize that a Childers win wouldn’t be that bad.

Cochran’s a bad character to be sure but what was done to him and his family is pretty rancid.

Particularly after the disgusting display we’ve seen from conservatives this week regarding our returned POW.

I was watching some of the coverage last night; it literally turned my stomach to see these entirely fact-free attacks. I thought I’d seen everything, but this is the most un-American display yet.

Going to be a long summer!

And the national Democratic Party will have no fucking clue how to attack the Republicans on what should be an open dunk.

The dead party twisting in the wind.

Great point. I completely agree.

Couldn’t agree more. Un-American is the only way I can think of to describe it.

If McDaniel wins, we have a shot. McDaniel is actually going to have to run a credible, no-gaffe, no public embarrassment race which might not be possible for him.

Travis Childers might be a more recognizable name in MS politics than McDaniel. ChiIders is from a pedigreed MS political family with clout, an Ole Miss grad and was already elected to 2 terms as US Rep from MS.

If I was Rinsed Prepuce, I would be making some calls to Jackson, Gulfport, Biloxi, Tupelo and even Pascagoula.

Love it.

Yeah, and McDaniel still hasn’t been cleared of wrongdoing in the nursing home scandal, correct? It might be too late for him to run a no-gaffe, no public embarrassment race.

Childers would still be the underdog, but much less so against McDaniel. I’d probably give him a 35-40% chance against McDaniel versus a 5% chance against Cochran.

With McDaniel, the potential certainly exists for a Todd Akin-esque gaffe that could turn Childers into the favorite. But Childers would likely still need that kind of help to pull it off.

yes, I do. kentucky as well. the dems are not going to loose the senate. the msm is saying that to deter democrats from voting.

That doesn’t matter at all. As long as there’s room on the batshit right, that is the guy who gets the vote. The “True Conservative” will be the other guy every time in MS.

GOTP will need to spend money in MS only if the Democrats do. And I haven’t seen any likelihood of any 50-state strategy from the Democrats since Dean left.

What is emerging is the possibility of Dem Senate pickups in three safe southern or border states. That possibility only exists if Democrats think outside their traditional box and fund Grimes, Nunn and Childers like they would somebody from Chicago or Boston.
