Discussion: William Barr Confirmation Vote Delayed

Uh oh. This delay may screw up the plan to have Barr confirmed so Acting AG Matthew “Flop Sweat” Whittaker can get out of testifying to the House Judiciary Committee next week.

Whitaker should get his tail roasted anyways…they already have his seat ready…

Or, did the complicit Republican committee members decide they want to give Whitaker more time to muddy the waters? There’s so many possibilities for ratfuckery here.

Barr has made it plain he does not think the public or Congress should see investigation results concerning persons reasonably suspected of a crime, but not indicted or convicted of a crime. He asserts it would unfairly slander their reputations. And the OLC says a sitting President should not be indicted for a crime.

Barr wants anything Mueller’s investigation discovers that would indicate Trump is personally culpable in a crime to remain secret. I can’t read it any other way.

I’m a little surprised by this. Republicans have the votes to push him through. Whitaker is a hairbrain that is even embarrassing to the GOP so they are anxious to get Barr sworn in, so I am surprised by this delay.

Normally, I would say it is a normal delay.

But in these times…

And with a nominee who has all but sewn his lips to Trump’s butt…

Does TPM have some kind of theme this morning? Is it gnathophyma week?

Senators Blumenthal and Grassley (!) have introduced legislation to require any Special Counsel to prepare a report of its findings and submit it and the underlying evidence to Congress, including in the event that the Special Counsel is fired or replaced or if the investigation is terminated. Lindsey may try to block it, but Blumenthal says it has bipartisan support.

Maybe. Or maybe it’s Blumenthal’s plan to make sure Whitaker does testify.

How can the delay of confirmation of this slimeball not be ‘unusual’ ? He basically admitted he was planning to find a way to keep Muller’s report from becoming public. It’s what he does as his history indicates.

On the extremely slim chance it passes, some GOP Senator will insist it is effective ONLY for investigations going forward, and any current investigations are not to be grandfathered in. Or else it gets tabled.

Bounce Barr!

Yes, of course. Barr will not release the report or will heavily redact it and R. Senators will hem and haw that gosh darn it they’d love to read it, but just can’t. Which is exactly what they want, because if the report makes the conclusion that the President likely committed crimes, then they might be embarrassed for doing nothing about it.

Also, the Grassley/Blumenthal bill will go nowhere as McConnell will not bring it up for a vote and the senate won’t force him to. Why? Because again, if the Senate actually got the report, then they might be embarrassed for not acting on it and McConnell only cares about retaining the majority in the next Senate election. That’s it.

The only hope this sees the light of day is Pelosi somehow finding a way to force it out. It isn’t likely she’ll be able to, but that is the best we can hope for at this point.
