Discussion: Why Didn't Dems Go After Trump's Tax Returns With Both Guns Blazing?

Little-known fact: I’m a millipede.

Perhaps. But another explanation for Dems’ caution is that 50+ years of being called too liberal or radical or anti-American or obstructive or whatever has gotten to them, and they’ve internalized the attacks and labels and become “tamed”, and turned into their own repressors. They’re terrified of being accused of these things, so they dial it down and make sure not to offend anyone or anger Repubs too much.

Of course nothing new here if so–and I say so. Since Carter this has been Dems’ basic MO, shooting themselves in the foot in order to win over those all-important “centrists” who scoff at anything that reeks of being too liberal, combative or partisan. They’ve been beaten down to the point where they’re terrified of doing anything truly bold, and merely go through the motions to have something to tell their donors and voters.

That’s why we need more junior firebrands like AOC and Tlaib, to kick Dems’ asses and force the leadership to take real, bold action and not just do and say things for show. An entire generation or two of browbeaten liberals and corporatist neoliberals needs to be pushed out and replaced with fighting progressives who mean business. It feels like Dems are running out the clock and hoping to avoid a real fight. That would be a disaster for them and the country. If they cliche fight or die every applied, it’s now. Trump CANNOT be allowed to win.

Trump isn’t very smart and especially with the way he lies.

The greatest risk from his tax returns will be exposing the massive amount of financing and business ties he personally and his business have with Russia…after campaigning that he has no ties to Russia. But that will not matter to his base which all supports close ties to Russian and espcially Putin’s Global Neo-nazi movement which Trump is closely aligned.

You can also bet the Mueller report exposes Trump’s ties to the Russia and Putin’s global neo-Nazi movement…which is legal and not part of the legal defintion of “collusion with an enemy”.

The Question for America: Do we want to be part of the global neo-Nazi movement being led by Putin and other dictators like the Saudi Rpyal family? If yes…Trump is your man. If no, then people need to speak up and put pressure on Democrats to grow a spine and act!

I have been cheerfully stating for months that Trump will not be on the ballot in 2020 (I happen to believe that )

That does not change my view that Trump cannot be allowed to win. I also believe that if Trump is on the ballot, his chances of winning go up dramatically.

Trump’s lawyers are playing the long game here.

Delay, Delay, Delay until AFTER the 2020 elections, then, if he loses, it’s a moot point, and if he wins, he can then use his new dictator powers to just squash the whole idea of a President being subject to any law.

what the Dems need to do in my irrelevant opinion is to supplement this reasoned, legally sound, legislative committee approach with a complementary full guns blazing attack via their best rhetorical blowhards (I am not sure who that would be?). Go after the guy in a concerted strategy, through the media, every day; call him out for the liar, coward, cheat, bully, public A-hole that he is. Fight fire with fire.

Hmmmmmmm…

Lemme see.

  • IF Trump loses the 2020 election he is, essentially, a convict, facing life-PLUS types of time.

  • If he wins, he becomes dictator

There is absolutely no way the Trump Campaign or anything else he is associated with (including the actual voting) will not be heavily, heavily, heavily corrupted.

They never do that—about anything—and I don’t understand why

Well DUH!

Every dirty trick and voter suppression tactic will be in full implementation by the Republicans along with outright calls by Trump to racism, misogyny, and yes, FASCIST VIOLENCE.

Trump will order his “base” to take up arms and kill the “opposition” if it looks like he is going to lose, which the MSM will work overtime covering up to keep their “Horse Race” memes going as long as they can.
He will declare a “National Emergency” and place armed guards (probably local Police supported by militia types as it is illegal for him to use the US Military) at polling places, but only in minority neighborhoods.

2020 will make 1968 look like a love-fest by comparison.

I see that pretty much every day on MSNBC. Not on the other networks - either cable or network. The problem is not the Democratic establishment. It is the producers who only want corporate-friendly hacks on air.

Austin, Austin, Austin – don’t hold it in, man. Tell us how you really feel about the apples that fell from the senescent Trump tree

Correlation is not causation, but it is a damned big hint.

Any e > 0 represents a quantum increase in the odds of his winning. On the other hand, in October 2016 we couldn’t imagine his odds being much better than 99:1 against.

Let me nominate a few: Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, Congressman Adam Schiff, Senator Elizabeth Warden, … (These are in decreasing blowhard-iness.)

Two points: 1) There is virtually no chance that the fight over the returns will be over before Election Day next year.

  1. There are many more important issues to use against Trump.

Why Didn’t Dems Go After Trump’s Tax Returns With Both Guns Blazing?

… because it would have been a TERRIBLE idea. Penning polite requests to the IRS accomplishes the goal without handing the Trump Cabal a can of gasoline. Doing it this way makes them seem judicious and circumspect.

No, but I can’t help wondering if the strategic impact is going to help or hurt. I mean, his base has proven that they don’t care. The small movable middle either won’t care or will see it as an abuse of new power.

Unless it’s to drive Trump even farther over the edge, and I can’t imagine where that might lead, what’s the purpose?

There’s something far less complicated and far more obvious on why Dems will carefully create the APPEARANCE of going after Drumpf’s tax returns, but never really get them: Power protects power and Dems realize they could set precedent that comes back to bite them. Once a person gets into the cushy, elitist club otherwise known as “Congress”, he/she realizes people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. But, Dems are in a real bind; they must profess outrage, pretend to go after the returns, but then voice resignation and despair that the returns simply can’t be obtained because reasons. This is all pure bi-partisan cronyism and “We the People” will never see the full Mueller report or Drumpf’s tax returns.

Schiff is wide awake on this.

That is probably true but they will delay all of them until after election day.

Trump’s tax returns will be released to the House. The law gives no legitimate leeway for denying a congressional request. Any federal court judge who isn’t a complete Trump shill has to allow it.

And will likely not grant a temporary stay on the order pending appeals.
