Here’s what I don’t understand: How does someone else’s sexual identity affect some else? I mean, unless you’re an incredibly insecure, close minded individual, with possibly confused sexual urges…eh, never mind, I think I’ve started to figure it out.

Someone in the yuppie gang also stole one of the victim’s bag that had fallen to the ground. As police approached one of them grabbed the bag as they ran away.
What can you say about a city where even the yuppies will beat you into a coma and steal your belongings if they think they can get away with it?

This is a silly headline.
They were graduates of Archbishop Wood High School, where another uncharged member of the group was forced to step down as a coach for the school
Just guessing, but who better than a young Catholic femme fatale to whip up two sexually insecure Catholic males into the competitive alpha frenzy that, no doubt, caused the out of left field attack?
These graduates and former staff of a Catholic High School should give the kindly Pope pause…

Reaction from the Archdiocese:
“Archbishop Chaput has a record of acting against LGBT people. He is known for expelling a child of a lesbian couple from Catholic school and denying Communion to LGBT advocates. Chaput recently aided efforts by the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference opposing a non-discrimination bill that would make sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes.”
It’s a culture that breeds hate, and then apologizes when it’s acted upon, as if that should be sufficient.

Not sure how young, unemployed, suburban means “yuppie” to you. And I’m also not sure why you are throwing around the word “yuppie” anyway - is there something wrong with being young, living in a city and working?

Absent a state statute, the feds could most certainly charge them with hate crimes, after which they will have wished PA had their own law. Federal felonies do not erase themselves. The female has a real alcohol problem, and all three are going to jail.

The solution to the problem is left as an exercise for the student.
As far as I can see, the answer to the question is than no one ever told them they couldn’t or shouldn’t. In fact, most of the voices they heard encouraged them. Or, if you follow the religious extremists’ argument about religious freedom to its logical conclusion, it was the Christian thing to do.
