Discussion: Why A Menendez Conviction Would Be A Nightmare For Senate Democrats

Sounds more like Hannity to me. I can almost hear that annoying whiny, nasal, fingernails on-a-blackboard voice of his, like a hyena with adenoids.

I also think it’s fine to say that we want him gone…soon after lame-duck Christy’s out of office.

Unquestionably. And that could drag out for months.

Unfortunately, it does leave a shadow across his campaign. As much as I agree with @maxaroo, these kinds of allegations killed Bob McDonnell’s chances to run for higher office despite his successful appeal. That shadow is enough to make all but the most committed NJ Dems who see the strategic implications decide to meh their way out of voting.

And having Torricelli (ethics problems, ten years out of office) as their only alternative can’t be too attractive.

What a world we live in. Homer put his finger on it in The Odyssey.

Doesn’t matter. If you showed them video of Trump handing over the launch codes to Putin while conducting a satanic human sacrifice ritual in the Rose Garden, you couldn’t get seventeen Republican votes to impeach him in the Senate.

You came this close and blew it. Typical Trump apologist.

Sen. Bob Torricelli (D-NJ), who left office under an ethics cloud of his own more than a decade ago.

Is the Dem bench in NJ so thin that this clown actually has a chance?

He fails to mention the case Schneiderman is building.

But there’s this from Scarface: “Tony, the law has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. I’m an expert at raising that doubt.”

Primary ‘Shady Bob’ Menendez anyways. He’s been a slimeball for years, and he’s out of touch with the Democratic party – particularly on matters pertaining to Cuba.

Oh, I wasn’t thinking of his future. I was thinking of dems’ possible strategies. If the conviction is being appealed, that buys time for a dem to replace Christy.

If a Democratic governor wins in November, this on some level might be best since he can replace Menendez (and damn yes – no f-ing way, should he resign before the new governor comes in, and Democrats can say “he has a right to appeal” or “the people have spoken, Merrick Garland, assholes” if anyone says something) with someone less tainted.

Anything is possible in a wave election. Know hope.

In Illinois it’s our governors, not our senators. We’re pretty good about sending quality senators to D.C.

No he will appoint Obama, Just Kidding!!! A boy can dream right? Forget a sec that Obama would assuredly decline, but I would take such pleasure in right wing heads simultaneously exploding across the US. Come on Christie, why not go out with a bang?!

Democrats should invoke the McConnell rule, where an incumbent doesn’t get fill any vacancies in his last year of office.

As long as we are in partisan hellscape, let’s hope the judge is a democrat and allows for endless delays throughout the trial.
Then- let’s hope that he’s convicted after Christie’s term ends and the new Democratic governor can appoint someone who is not shady AF and then Dems can have a senator who isn’t a poster child for corruption.

Democrats are their own worst nightmare. We lost the Presidency to Trump. To Trump! We have no relevance in the House. We do not control the Senate. Worst of all, as incompetent as Trump and the Republicans have been at governing I see no coherent strategy on the part of the Dems. to make any significant gains at the mid-terms. Instead, it seems the usual Dem. election strategy; presume that voters are smart enough to plainly see the unfitness of Republicans and therefore elect Democrats by default. What the party should do is follow Bernie Sanders’ populist liberal message lead, but instead will continue to follow Bill Clinton’s lead of cozying up to Wall Street money. In short, I’ve no faith in the Democratic party to win anything until they prove otherwise.

First of all there’s plenty of evidence that Trump obstructed justice…like his own words on tape and elsewhere (comments to Russians in Oval Office, etc.). Secondly there’s a reason Trump has refused to honor his own commitment to release his tax returns. He’s been involved in dirty real estate and money laundering for more than a decade. Mueller’s final package will be a blockbuster. The question is when it will come, not what’s in it.

The incompetence is all yours, Snookums, judging by your comment.
