Discussion: Whitesboro Changes Racist Seal

Discussion for article #244997

So all the previous “serious” news coverage had no effect but when the ‘Daily Show’ shows up…

That’s because the ‘serious’ news never challenges people for their idiotic beliefs. The Daily Show shows up and they not only show how the people they are interviewing are idiots, they make them feel like ‘idiots’ too. As well they deserve.

The Iroquois Confederation was “wrestled” out of more land in upstate NY than just the Village of Whitesboro. Illegal chokeholds indeed, involving local, state and federal governments which reneged on treatys with the tribes.

I still can’t decide if Jebediah Springfield standing on a bear or South Park’s town flag is a better comparison for this. South Park gets the advantage on blatant racism but Springfield’s got the edge on bizarre folksy legend.

I bet the “founder” wasn’t the white guy, but the guy getting choked, or at least his ancestors.

Hard to decide. They’re both profoundly embiggening.

The previous design was meant to depict a historic wrestling match between the village’s white founder and an Oneida Indian.

As in WWE?

Plus this article was not well researched. The initial seal actually had a “choke hold”, the guy had his hands on his neck. Native Americans sued, and in 1970 the seal was changed to put the hands on the shoulders…though it still obviously looks bad.

I’d prefer a video from the point shown, with the Native American continuing to fall back as he holds the settler and then tosses the settler over him so the settler lands on his back.

The Oneidas now run a profitable gambling casino/hotel complex; does that count?

So true. Sadly, we are reduced to this.

How about the name of the city? “Whitesboro” basically means “White people’s town”

It does not appear to be a celebration of sport to me.

Good move.

I take it they will change it to the image of an Indian being shot in the face.
