I have a friend who is an electrician and a former Navy enlisted man. I don’t think that he would think that qualifies him for the NSC. He is very bright and would surely do a hugely better job than Bannon however.

What this amounts to is that with the losses at Department of State few people with any knowledge of what is going on in the world, or have any outside-of-the-belt viewpoint, will be attending the meetings. So, a group of inexperienced ideologues who have questionable judgment to begin with will be recommending foreign policy decisions based on what they read in the alt-right press.

Just because we now seem to have a neo-nazi, white supremacist as a “principal” member of the National Security Council, and Trump is at least partially excluding the Joint Chiefs and the Director of National Intelligence, you think something might go wrong? Maybe something like requiring Muslims to wear a Crescent & Star badge, or the building of internment camps? I know, how about invading and annexing Mexico, just to keep us safe and to protect all of the (white) American citizens living there. Of course, what could possibly go wrong?

Per Wikipedia, Bannon was in the Navy for seven years. If he went in as an Ensign (virtually certain), he separated as Lieutenant (j.g.). The last time I checked, Lieutenants are not flag officers and not usually asked to make policy.
Although he apparently has a Master’s in National Security Studies from Georgetown, that is hardly a unique distinction. I don’t see how it qualifies him to be on the Principals Committee of the NSC.
Of course, none of that really matters – what matters is that the Cheeto-dusted Shitgibbon believes that Bannon will be loyal to him.
