This sort of maneuverāhe was making a joke; he was just entertaining the crowd, trying to up his ratings; he was just fooling aroundāis something that Seth Abramson has had useful insights about: the postmodern nature of Trumpās criminality. Weāre so accustomed to criminals and miscreants operating in secret that to operate in the open somehow seems to be less criminal. Itās actually deconstructionist wrongdoing in that it destroys the secret/public binary, not to mention the true-untrue binary. Be openly corrupt; abuse power in broad daylight; lie with great obviousness, and youāre good to go. Conversely, the Wikileaks were substantively worthlessābut the fact that the information in question was undisclosed made the ābombshellā interpretation irresistible.
Any time Trump is called out for flip-flopping or flat-out lying, he indignantly claims that:
- he was simply joking, but weāre all too clueless to get the joke
- he was deliberately misinterpreted by that malevolent entity known as the mainstream media, or
- he never said what we all heard him say previously ā itās all fake news.
Yes, he was. Trump says outrageous stuff to get attention all the time. This is exceedingly stupid.
We were just making a joke when we elected him.
