Signs of a quiet revolt against Trump-Putin have emerged, likely led by Mattis. I said the day of the presser that I thought Putin looked weak. 5 days later, my views have not changed. I can’t think of a single substantive thing that Putin got out of Trump. In fact, I think that press conference marked the turning point, the point at which this Russia-US axis broke down.
Ukraine is getting more real assistance. This stupid referendum is now rejected. Rendering US citizens for Russian justice is out the window. Trump/Putin’s attempt to weaken sanctions is now over. Putin has control of Syria but is that really a good thing for him? Other than some weak tweets about Montenegro, I can’t see what Trump and Putin accomplished. In the interim, Putin’s spy ring got heavily exposed. Russia ain’t s**t folks. Neither is Trump.
She said Trump’s “frightened fawning over Putin is an embarrassment and a grave threat to our democracy.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had a sunnier view of the likely second get-together.

So I see the Pentagon and our Intelligence services are at cross-purposes with the “President”. Seems to me a highly volatile, unstable situation that can’t persist for very long. We certainly live in interesting times.

Just after undergrad, I spent half a year at Leningrad State University, doing language and culture. One of our instructors pushed back one day when our American cohort asserted the USSR had no free elections. She declared, utterly serious and devoid of irony, “We have free elections. You are free to vote for the one candidate on the ballot.” That’s the kind of “referendum” Putin had in mind for Ukraine…good for somebody in the WH that he or she vetoed it.
Yes. I’ve thought for a while now that the rat-fuckiest thing Putin could do once Trump was exposed would be to hack the elections in a way that benefits Democrats, making the likely Blue Wave look less legitimate and giving the GOP dead-enders something to howl about to distract themselves from their massive string of self-owns… It might be good to discuss this possibility openly to defuse it in advance.
“Why wouldn’t it?” There is so much to remember when you lie; easier to tell the truth. Will there be anyone else in the room with Putin and his lapdog?

I’m 50/50 on the possibility that Putin won’t show. Maybe 60/40 that he won’t.
He won’t do anything that will make him look weak. And this response is already a put down. It could even serve as a ready excuse for icing the Washington meeting.
I say we should stay tuned.
